Operations performance dialogues

Besides a financial performance dialogue, specialty chemicals conglomerates also need to establish an operational performance dialogue. The corporate center can help drive operational excellence by challenging and coaching the individual business units, setting benchmarks, and fostering know-how transfer between the units. 

The system is driven by a software/working under window and rurming on personal computer. The system is based on using dialogue boxes which enable the user-software communication. The as-built system leads the operator step by step in its verification operations by indicating him the operations to perform. The system records the measurements results and stores them in the memory. 

The job is not complete until another chemist can independently run your method. I have transferred many methods over the years. Despite the use of comprehensive method documentation, problems often occur during start-up in a new laboratory, particularly when chemists new to CE are involved. These often minor problems are always solved through a dialogue with the operator. Even seemingly minor details can be befuddling. For example, be sure to specify the electrolyte reservoir size in your method. Using too small an electrolyte reservoir can cause precision problems, particularly when multiple runs are performed from a set of electrolytes. 

More generally, the extent to which workplace structures and practices match the social dialogue at sector level on both substitution and agreed convenanten and are in practice able to achieve the performance objectives set sectorally is not entirely cle. However, this does not necessarily imply underperformancc - the approaches at sectoral level are themselves new and in many cases themselves not yet finalised therefore it may be too early to see clear operational results.

The next step is problem dependent. For each of the units, we click twice on it and the specifications dialogue box appears on the screen. It is important to understand what its purpose is and also it is useful to know about the operation it is going to perform, the components involved, and the operating conditions. In the examples, we will pay more attention to this point. CHEMCAD also performs economic evaluations. In the dialogue box for the unit specifications, we see a particular tab, Cost Estimations, where we have to provide further information on the material, type, and size of the unit for CHEMCAD to compute a cost. Most of the times, equipment must be sized beforehand to compute the cost. 

With this technology the dialogue between the human operator in the control room and the process events in his charge are supported and guided by the process computer (Fig. 12). The necessary safety functions are automatically performed by subordinated systems. The man in charge still makes the operational decisions, but the computer so prepares the requisite information as to present him with clear-cut conditions on which he can decide and avoid overburdening him with too much information. In this way he will not be put under too heavy a strain, so that he is unlikely to initiate wrong interventions even in critical phases of plant operation.
