Onchorhynchus

Protamine, a basic protein from the testes of fish of the salmon family, e.g. Salmo and Onchorhynchus species (see insulin, page 417), is a heparin antagonist, which may be used to counteract haemorrhage caused by overdosage of heparin.

The eggs of Onchorhynchus keta yielded a new variant of vitamin E, a-tocomonoenol, which differs from a-tocoph-erol by the presence of a double bond at the end of the terpenic chain. The antioxidant properties of a-tocomonoenol are similar to those of vitamin E, because they derive from the chromenol part of the molecule.
