On the cusp

The hazard criteria for Benchmark 3 define chemicals that are on the cusp of being benign they have some hazard characteristics of modest concern, but no characteristics of high concern. 

Nuclear energy is an old idea whose time as come again. As we stand on the cusp of the new millennium, we must recapture the power of that idea to ensure that nuclear energy—and the many benefits it provides society—never fades into the background of the American consciousness. 

Much of what 1 write in this book will seem controversial, but it is all thoroughly grounded on scientific evidence - evidence that I describe in detail in this book. Furthermore, as controversial as my conclusions seem, there has been a growing acceptance of them. NICE has acknowledged the failure of antidepressant treatment to provide clinically meaningful benefits to most depressed patients the UK government has instituted plans for providing alternative treatments and neuroscientists have noted the inability of the chemical-imbalance theory to explain depression.6 We seem to be on the cusp of a revolution in the way we understand and treat depression. 

We are currently on the cusp of a new era in the treatment of cancers whereby we will learn to incorporate new drugs that are likely not cytotoxic on their own but when used in combination with standard chemotherapy and radiation hold the promise of superior tumor responses that will hopefully translate into improved local control and improved survival. At the same time it is reasonable to expect an increased selectivity for malignant cells compared to normal tissues given that many of these targets are either not altered in normal cells or their expression is not usually increased in normal tissues. This leads to the anticipation of no increase in normal tissue toxicities when these novel targeted agents are used to treat patients.

In a synthesis of the immunosuppressant Sanglifehrin A, two hydroxyl groups and a ketone were mutually protected as an acetal [Scheme 1.33].60 The ketone was generated by a Wacker oxidation of the terminal alkene 33.1 whereupon it was immediately converted to the bicyclic acetal 33.2 on treatment with acid. The acetal 33.2 survived the many steps required to elaborate the complex intermediate 33.3 but its stability was to exact a price the synthesis languished on the cusp of completion until conditions were found to hydrolyse the acetal without insult to the remaining delicate functionality. Hie three functional groups were eventually reclaimed in a modest 33% yield by interrupting the hydrolysis at 50% completion. 

I thought of my father huddled over the fire in the laboratory. In this most imperfect of rose gardens, I had found a perfect rose, just as he ordained. It was on the cusp of being full blown and had a bead of dew on an inner petal. I held its stem and made a clean cut, let the branches fall back, and stood up with the sappy knife in one hand and the perfect rose in the other. Its fragrance was intense, and I threw back my head to draw a deeper breath. Then I saw a puff of smoke on the London road. 

Natural products have provided some of the most effective drugs for the treatment of cancer, including such well-known drugs as paclitaxel (Taxol Bristol-Myers Squibb) adriamycin, vinblastine, and vincristine. Natural products have also provided many compounds that have led to the discovery of new biochemical mechanisms. This review summarizes the major natural products in clinical use today and introduces several new ones on the cusp of entering clinical practice. The review is organized by mechanism of action, with compounds that interact with proteins discussed first, followed by compounds that interact with RNA or DNA. 

The rise of complex and amorphous NGO alliances serves as an emerging indicator of a global business environment that is on the cusp of fundamental change. Increasingly, previously marginal actors create opportunities to realize their collective potential as networked actors in ways unimagined in the past. 

The pharmaceutics elaborated on in the two volumes of this text detaUing progress in basic and appUed knowledge suggest that we are on the cusp of improving the quality of the medication process for all. 

The short film is an apprentice story form in North America. In Europe it has for many years been accepted as an art form. But technological and creative changes, particularly over the last 10 years, suggest that we are on the cusp of considerable change. The purpose of this section of the book is to pose practical and speculative directions that change may take for the short film. 

Just as every birth chart includes all the planets, every horoscope has all 12 houses. The sign on the cusp, or beginning of the house, describes your approach to it. For instance, if the sign of the bull is on the cusp of your house of work, your attitude toward your job is Taurean, making you dependable, productive, and a bit of a plodder, regardless of whether that house is crammed full of planets or empty. 

The word cusp is used in two ways in astrology. When people say they were born on the cusp, they mean that their birthday falls at the end of one sign and the beginning of another. They usually think that they have qualities belonging to both signs. (I discuss this issue in Chapter 3.) When astrologers refer to the cusp of a house, they mean the house s starting point. 

If you were born on a day when the Sun moved from one sign to the next (that is, if you were born on the cusp ), you need to take an extra step to identify your Sun sign, but you can only do it if you know the time of your birth. What you want to figure out is this Which came first, your birth or the passage of the Sun into the next sign ... 

The sun s position in the heavens at the time of your birth determines your sign. If you were born at the beginning or end of a sign or you re unsure about your sign, turn to Chapter 1 and read the section entitled Bom on the Cusp. Also, in addition to its element, each sign has a polarity (positive or negative) and a quality or modality (cardinal, fixed, or mutable). For more on these terms, refer to Chapter 1. 

If you have an accurate copy of your birth chart, you can find your Midheaven on or near the cusp of the tenth house at the twelve o clock spot. If you re using the material in this book to determine your Ascendant (see Chapter 3), assume that your Midheaven is in the same sign that appears on the cusp of the tenth house. Either way, your I.C. is directly opposite the M.C., at or near the lowest point of your chart. 

Table 12-1 at the beginning of this chapter summarizes the concerns of each house. Table 12-2 suggests ways to interpret the sign on the cusp. 

Check out the planet that rules the sign on the cusp. 

The position of that planet tells you a great deal. In Andy Warhol s case, Virgo, the sign on the cusp of his second house, is ruled by Mercury. It can be found in flamboyant Leo — a perfect placement for an artist who literally painted money. 

If the Sign on the Cusp Is Your Approach to the Concerns of That House Is And the House Ruler Is... 

Say, for example, that you have Leo rising — that is, Leo on the cusp of your first house. When the Moon is in that sign, it s traveling through your first house. Once it swings into Virgo, it enters your second house. And so on. 

At any given moment, the Moon is in one sign of the zodiac and one house of your chart. If you want to get persnickety about it, you could figure out exactly when the Moon will hit the precise degree of each house cusp. But who has time for that Not me. I suggest that you simply note the sign on the cusp of each house. When the Moon enters that sign, that s your cue to turn your attention to the matters of that house. For example ... 

As an example, take a look at Nicole Kidman s chart in Chapter 3. She has Scorpio rising. So Taurus is on the cusp of her seventh house. Thus, if she were to get married a third time, she might want to do it after a New Moon in Taurus.
