Of hydroxy acids

Chiral Lactones and Polyesters. Similar to intermolecular reactions described previously. Upases also catalyze intramolecular acylations of hydroxy acids the reactionsults in the formation of lactones. [Pg.341]

Polyesters have been obtained in organic medium by polyesterification of hydroxy acids,328,329 hydroxy esters,330 stoichiometric mixtures of diols and diacids,331-333 diols and diesters,334-339 and diols and cyclic anhydrides.340 Lipases have also been reported to catalyze ester-ester interchanges in solution or in die bulk at moderate temperature.341 Since lipases obviously catalyze the reverse reaction (i.e., hydrolysis or alcoholysis of polyester), lipase-catalyzed polyesterifications can be regarded as equilibrium polycondensations taking place in mild conditions (Scheme 2.35). [Pg.83]

No published work exists on the kinetics of acid permanganate oxidation of hydroxy-acids although Pink and Stewart have noted that benzilic acid is oxidised by acid permanganate to benzophenone in an autocatalytic process with knjo/ Dio of unity. [Pg.325]

The Ester Rule states that in the esterification of hydroxy acids of D-series with methanol, the shift takes place to right but in esterification with ethanol the shift to the right increases. [Pg.142]

Kinetic studies of the oxidation of aspirin by bromamine-T, A-bromosuccinimide (NBS), and A-bromophthalimide (NBP) support a mechanism in which the unpro-tonated oxidant is the active species. " The ultimate product of the reaction is 2,4,6-tribromophenol, which arises through decarboxylation, bromination and loss of acetic acid. The NBP and NBS oxidations of -hydroxy acids are found to be similar in mechanism. [Pg.231]

Amides of keto acids were reduced to amides of hydroxy acids biochemically using Saccharomyces cerevisiae to give optically pure products [7059]. Refluxing with lithium aluminum hydride in ether for 6 hours reduced both the ketonic and the amidic carbonyl in A -methyl-5-phenyl-5-oxopentanamide and gave 82% yield of 5-methylamino-l-phenylpentanol [1134]. [Pg.170]

The influence of a cream containing 20% glycerin and its vehicle on skin barrier properties has been investigated. Recent studies have shown that polymers offer several advantages and can be used in skin care products. Phase diagrams were determined for lactic and isohexanoic hydroxy acids as well as salicylic acid with water, a nonionic surfactant and a paraffinic oil, to outline the influence of hydroxy acids on the structure in a model for a skin lotion. The results showed the influence of the acid to be similar to that of the oil but that the difference in chain length between the two alpha acids had only insignificant influence. The results are discussed from two aspects the structures involved in the lotion as applied, and the action of the lotion residue on the skin after the evaporation of the water. [Pg.198]

The degree of EDA is governed by the nature of the substituent (R). The effect of R is observed often in opposite directions between amino acid MRNi and hydroxy acid MRNi. For example, the increase in bulkiness of R increases the EDA of amino acid-MRNi but decreases that of hydroxy acid MRNi as shown in Fig. 3 (77, 72). An increase (decrease) in electron density at the chiral center of the modifying reagent increases (decreases) the EDA of amino acid-MRNi and decreases (increases) the EDA of hydroxy acid-MRNi as shown in Table 111 (52a). [Pg.222]

The synthesis of -hydroxy acids via their esters from ketones and the Reformatsky reagent is still one of the best approaches for this class of compounds. This reagent. [Pg.91]
