In 1919, he resumed his position as assistant in the Berlin Institute and, in 1920, obtained his Habilitation with a thesis on the ring-chain tautomer-ism of y- and 5-hydroxyaldehydes. In 1922, Helferich was called to the position of Departmental Head at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Fibre Chemistry in Berlin-Dahlem. However, he never actually occupied this position, for, in the autumn of that year, he accepted a personal chair in organic chemistry at the University of Frankfurt in the Institute headed by Julius von Braun. [Pg.1]

The importance of the thioesters was realized at the beginning of the 1950s by Theodor Wieland from the University of Frankfurt am Main (Wieland and Pflei-derer, 1957), who used aminoacyl mercaptans as activated amino acids in peptide syntheses (see Sect. 5.3). Thus, 30 years later, this area of basic research came to be useful for prebiotic chemistry. [Pg.204]

In the study by Thompson, et al. (11), the ml of gel released per 100 g emulsion for the reference emuTsion without soy, with soy isolate (SIF), soy concentrate (SCF) or soy flour (SF) was 6.07, 5.83, 5.49 and 3.08, respectively, when the hydration ratios were 1 4 (flourrwater) for SIF, 1 3 for SCF and 1 2 for SF. The ml gel released per 100 g emulsion containing 10, 15, 20, and 25% soy protein was 6.70, 5.01, 3.94 and 3.57, respectively. When soy protein concentrate was incorporated into an emulsion at the 3.5% level, the processing yields, textural profile and sensory textural attributes of frankfurters were not different among the products with and without added soy concentrate (13). An objective measure of compression and shear modulus indicated that soy protein concentrate incorporated into frankfurters at the 3.5% level had no effect on batter strength or texture ( M). The addition of a cottonseed protein to frankfurters to replace 5, 10 or 15% of the meat resulted in higher pH, less cured color, less firmness of skin, softer texture and reduced desirability as judged by a sensory panel (J5J. [Pg.86]

Large cannons were made at a very early date, even if they were never used. The fact that such a weapon was possessed by a town, possibly terrorized opponents. One of such huge weapons was the Faust Bucleae of Frankfurt, made in 1399 and used at the siege of Tannenburg Castle (Ref 7, p 27). Method of manuf of Gunpowder at the end of 14th century is shown in illustrations on p 16 of Ref 7. It is briefly described on p 24 of Marshall 1 (Ref 11)... [Pg.124]

Exotic atomic nuclei may be described as structures than do not occur in nature, but are produced in collisions. These nuclei have abundances of neurons and protons that are quite different from the natural nuclei. In 1949, M.G, Mayer (Argonne National Laboratory) and J.H.D. Jensen (University of Heidelberg) introduced a sphencal-shell model of die nucleus. The model, however, did not meet the requirements and restrains imposed by quantum mechanics and the Pauli exclusion principle, Hamilton (Vanderbilt University) and Maruhn (University of Frankfurt) reported on additional research of exotic atomic nuclei in a paper published in mid-1986 (see reference listedi. In addition to the aforementioned spherical model, there are several other fundamental shapes, including other geometric shapes with three mutually peipendicular axes—prolate spheroid (football shape), oblate spheroid (discus shape), and triaxial nucleus (all axes unequal). [Pg.1211]
