Occurrence of protein

The potential for toxicity resulting from any accessory parts of the product such as chemical linkers or carriers should be addressed. The occurrence of proteins derived from the production system, generally referred to as residual host proteins, is another factor that should be considered when investigating the potential for toxicity.

Inhibition of protein synthesis by aminoglycoside antibiotics, especially by streptomycin, is bactericidal (rev.46)). The occurrence of protein fragments or of phosphorus impurities in quantities (or specific activities) sufficient to affect the final assay of the DNA fraction must be considered (30,32,75). 

Conceivably a fraction of the protein could be involved in transverse structures through the membrane. If such structures did not form ordered arrays, they would escape detection by X-ray methods. It is entirely possible that future X-ray studies will produce estimates of the fraction of protein thus involved by comparison of calibrated total electron density of ordered material, with values expected for whole material. Until such estimates are produced by X-ray or some other method, the occurrence of protein in this situation must remain hypothetical. Until then, the fact that there is no compelling experimental evidence in support of this hypothesis should not be ignored.
