Nylon polishing

The series of grits typically employed is 240, 320, 400, and 600 6/zm diamond paste on nylon polishing cloth and 1/rni, followed by 0.25/un diamond paste on napped cloth., The polishing resin in which the crystal is mounted should be at least 6 mm wider than the crystal so as to minimize rounding of the edges of the crystal. 

Initial adhesion tests were made with 3.5- X 1- X 0.064-inch specimens of aluminum (Aluminum Associates No. 2024) and cold-rolled steel (polished ASTM A-415). Later tests were made with strips of copper, chrome-coated steel (Weirton Steel Co.), and brass with molded nylon 66 bars and with Mylar 300A poly (ethylene terephthalate) film. Before use, the specimens were washed (scrubbed with a soft bristle brush) with a solution of Alconox detergent, rinsed with water, rinsed with acetone, and dried. 

Completing a circuit and measuring the current that flows on contact or separation can quantify the transfer of electrons [2]. A typical result on contact electrification is shown in Figure 24.3. The time constants associated with the current peaks can be adjusted by inserting a series resistance in the measurement circuit. In real time, the equilibration of surface state electrons occurs instantaneously. In these experiments, the plasma polymer of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) was deposited on two different substrate, nylon film and polished brass, and the contact and separation currents were measured with a (uncoated) brass probe... 

Polishing experiments were carried out on a bench top Struer s polisher with 3 mm thick metal disks (99.999% pure) of cross sectional area 7.5 cm. The table speed was 90 rpm and the disk holder was stationary. The applied downward pressure was about 4.3 x lO" N m. The solids concentration in the slurries was maintained at 3 % by weight and the slurry feed rate was 1 ml s for all the experiments. The slurry in the supply tank was stirred continuously with a magnetic stirrer to avoid settling of agglomerated particles. A Suba 500 polish pad was used and was hand conditioned prior to each experiment using a 220 grit sandpaper and a nylon brush. 

The plastics industry and all the products made from plastics are almost entirely dependent on chemicals extracted or produced from hydrocarbons. This includes not only the familiar materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), epoxies, nylon, polyesters, polycarbonate. Teflon and Plexiglas, but also includes a large portion of materials made from rubber and a diverse group of other materials formulated from polymers such as tape, glue, ink, waterproofing, wax, and polishes. Virtually all the synthetic fibers used in textile products, Orion , Dacron , Nylon and polyesters are made from polymers based on hydrocarbons. 

OTHER COMMENTS used in the preparation of cyclohexanaone resins used as a solvent for cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, natural resins, vinyl resins, crude rubber, waxes, fats, shellac, and dichlorodiphenyltrichlorooethane (DDT) used in organic synthesis, particularly in the production of adipic acid for nylon used in wood stains, paint and varnish removers, spot removers, metal degreasers, polishes, and as an additive for lubricating oils.

If a clinker sample is to be subjected to the extraction, a random sample of 1- to 2-mm crushed clinker particles, taken from the same fraction as previously prepared for polished section examination, is further crushed in a mortar and pestle until all the subsample passes a 75- j,m screen (No. 200 mesh). If acement is to be treated, a random sample of approximately 10 grams is sieved to produce the 45- to 75-pm fraction (325 to 200 mesh) particles left on the 75- j,m screen could be further crushed to pass the screen or, perhaps, studied microscopically to determine belite nest percentage. Sieving, however, is an optional step the main benefit is that it provides a uniformly sized powder promoting a relatively uniform level of focus by removing "boulders" that may interfere with examination and particle manipulation. If sieve confaminafion is a likely problem, one can use disposable nylon with the proper mesh opening.
