Nutritious diet

Zinc Deficiency. A nutritional problem associated with consumption of large amounts of whole wheat products is the unavailability of dietary zinc, first observed in a patient with immature development and dwarfism in southern Iran (17). The patient showed marked improvement when placed on a well-balanced, nutritious diet for a year. In 1962, similar patients were observed in Egyptian villages. A deficiency of zinc was identified as the primary reason for the development of this condition. This deficiency of zinc results from the binding of that metal by the phytates present in whole wheat (18). Even when an excess of zinc is present in the diet, if conditions are right, that zinc may be complexed with the phytate and thus rendered unavailable to the body (see Mineral nutrients). Thus, a zinc deficiency may develop when its dietary level appears adequate but the diet contains large amounts of a food, such as whole wheat, that is high in phytates.

Halsted et al. (20) published results of their study in a group of 15 men who were rejected at the Iranian Army Induction Center because of malnutrition. A unique feature was that all were 19 or 20 years of age. Their clinical features were similar to those of zinc-deficient dwarfs reported earlier by Prasad et al. (6,7). They were studied for 6 to 12 months. One group was given a well-balanced nutritious diet containing ample animal protein plus a placebo capsule. A second group was given the same diet plus the diet alone without additional medication for six months, followed by the diet plus zinc for another six-month period. 

All people, regardless of age, should incorporate a healthy lifestyle beginning at birth that emphasizes regular exercise, nutritious diet, and tobacco avoidance to prevent and treat osteoporosis.

A complementary relationship exists between nutrition and dental health. Good nutrition is necessary for the development of sound healthy teeth and gum structures, while healthy teeth and gum structures are needed so that a nutritious diet may be eaten. 

These dietary preparations are free of fiber and other undigestible substances, but contain most of the essential nutrients in forms that require little or no digestion and which may be absorbed completely. Hence, little or no residue from the diet reaches the large intestine. The term elemental means that the nutrients are present in their most elemental or simple chemical forms, although the diets sometimes contain complex forms of certain nutrients. Similarly, the term semisynthetic means that the products contain mainly pure chemical compounds rather than the more complex natural food materials.
