The simplest method of locking a nut in position is by applying a lock nut. Lock nuts are a litde over half the thickness of a standard nut When used in conjunction with a standard nut and tightened, the lock nut is pushed against the thread flanks and locked. Fig. 12.8(a). [Pg.186]

It is perhaps worth emphasising that a nut locked with an anaerobic composition will function effectively without cleaning it or the corresponding fastener. But, although vibration is countered by the hard polymer, preventing relative movement, the actual removal torque will be less than if it had it been cleaned. It is essential not to confuse the function of the material - a hard incompressible solid that counters vibration - with what is, in fact, a test method providing a ranking order under idealised conditions (see Section 2.3.2.5). [Pg.42]

Nuts locked with the correct grade of anaerobic adhesive can readily be removed with conventional tools and, where equipment is used in very severe environmental conditions, anaerobic adhesives are frequently employed to prevent corrosion. [Pg.43]

Just as with nut locking, anaerobic compositions used with screws give greater security, reduced corrosion and reduced likelihood of damage while still allowing parts to be dismantled with conventional tools. These features are particularly useful when no axial tension can be generated in the screw for locking. [Pg.43]

Here are two more examples of penny-pinching. The piston of a reciprocating engine was secured to the piston rod by a nut, which w as locked in position by a tab washer. When the compressor was overhauled, the tightness of this nut was checked. To do this, the tab on the washer had to be knocked down and then knocked up again. This weakened the washer so that the tab snapped off in service, the nut worked loose, and the piston hit the end of the cylinder, fracturing the piston rod. [Pg.303]

These ratings can be interpreted as follows. In the case of the Time Stress PIF, all the operations have a high level of time stress, apart from close test valve, where stress is low. The operators are very experienced in carrying out all the tasks. Distractions are moderately high for close test valve, but otherwise low. Procedures are poor for secure locking nuts and secure blocking device, but above average for the other two tasks. [Pg.236]

In the example under discussion, it is found that there were few recorded instances of the test valve being left open. On the other hand, locking nuts are often found to be loose when the tanker returns to the depot. On the basis of this evidence and the frequency that these operations are performed, the following probabilities were assigned to these errors ... [Pg.238]
