Numbers comparison words

When I first became enamored by the number quattuordecillion I searched the world for other large number comparisons so I could adequately convey to students the majesty of the quattuordecillion. Here are some other comparisons. The Ice Age number (10 ) is the number of snow crystals necessary to form the Ice Age. The Coney Island number (10 ) is the number of grains of sands on the Coney Island beach. The talking number (10 ) is the number of words spoken by humans since the dawn of time. This last includes all baby talk, love songs, and congressional de-... [Pg.193]

The question arises as to whether comparisons with protein enzymes are justified. In other words, what can ribozymes really do An important parameter for measuring the efficiency of enzymes is the value of kc-JK. This quotient is derived from the values of two important kinetic parameters kc-Al is a rate constant, also called turnover number, and measures the number of substrate molecules which are converted by one enzyme molecule per unit time (at substrate saturation of the enzyme). Km is the Michaelis-Menten constant it corresponds to the substrate concentration at which the rate of reaction is half its maximum. [Pg.163]

From this description, however, alternative (and/or complementary) presentations of the structure and different symbolic representations can be deduced. These are often differently defined for specific groups of compounds and may be useful to obtain a clearer view of the atomic assembly and/or to make an easier comparison between different compounds. In other words it must be underlined that there is no ideal way of describing all structure types. The most appropriate way of description depends on the structure itself but also on a number of points we are interested in emphasizing (comparison with other structural types, comparison with other compounds of the same element, etc.). These points will be discussed in a few subsequent sections after the presentation of the conventional description. [Pg.95]

Sequence comparison is a technique for comparing two strings, sequences, or vectors for the purpose of determining the distance between them, and consequently their relationship. The items making up the sequence could be numbers, symbols, tones, letters, or words. We could, for example, compute a metric distance between the names William and Victor. Recognizing this, it is a simple extension to understand that assertions concerning the causes of firm performance are sequences of words, and that sequence comparison methodology can be used to compute similarity measures between these assertions. [Pg.94]

The scale of the tape depends on the calibration (comparison) of the production instrument and this depends on a number of other calibrations. The end of this chain is the highest calibration, which is a comparison against the SI standard, in other words the realization of the meter. [Pg.208]

Age comparisons are done almost as soon as a person can talk. Children take advantage of being older than one another to get first in line or get to stay up later or get whatever the prize. Doing age comparisons makes for interesting math problems, too. The usual rules apply Always let the variable represent a number, and use the math words for clues about adding, subtracting, and so on. [Pg.201]

Anandamide was isolated from water-insoluble fractions of the porcine brain. It binds to CB1 with rather moderate affinity (Ki 61 nM) and a low affinity for the CB2 receptor (Ki 1930 nM). The name anandamide is based on its chemical nature (an amide) and the Sanskrit word ananda meaning bliss. The chemical structure of anandamide can be divided into two major molecular fragments a polar ethanolamido head group and a hydrophobic arachidonyl chain. The polar head group comprises a secondary amide functionality with an N-hydroxyalkyl substituent while the lipophilic fragment is a non-conjugated c/ s tetraolefinic chain and an n-pentyl chain reminiscent of the lipophilic side chain found in the classical cannabinoids. A number of anandamide analogs have been synthesized and demonstrated to have considerable selectivity for the CB1 receptor in comparison to the CB2 receptor. [Pg.502]

There is often confusion concerning the distinction between accuracy and precision. The term precision is frequently used to describe the reproducibility or repeatability of results(85> (see previous section). Accuracy denotes the nearness of a measurement to its accepted value and should be expressed in terms of error (see below). Thus, accuracy involves a comparison with respect to a true or accepted value, and precision compares a result with the best value of several measurements made in the same way. An alternative (but less carefully worded) distinction is to describe precision as the number of digits employed in a calculation (which may not all be correct) and accuracy as the number of digits to which the result of that calculation is correct. [Pg.531]

While it is true that in this context, the word "maximum" depends only on number (namely, the number of atoms) and is, therefore, unambiguous HOWEVER, the word "minimum" refers to a set of bridges. Not only is the number of bridges important, also one must consider certain properties of each individual bridge. This is analogous to the comparison of triangles in Chapter 1 wherein shape had to be considered. In other words, there is, in most instances, more than one way in which the desired set of bridges can be delineated. [Pg.118]

However, at first sight, their relational judgements are just as suspect. To make a reliable judgement about the relative number of two sets you have to use one-to-one correspondence in other words you have to see whether each item in one set can be paired off with an equivalent item in the other. If each item in one set can be paired with one in the other and none is unpaired in either set, the two are equal in number. If not, the one which contains unmatched items has more. This use of one-to-one correspondence is a genuinely relational comparison you know whether the two numbers are the same or not but this does not tell you how many items there are in either set. [Pg.183]
