Carbohydrates and glycosides recently emerged as a novel class of nucleic acid binding compounds. A detailed study of the factors affecting the site-selectivity of some recently discovered antitumor antibiotics has shed new light on the role that oligosaccharides may play in nucleic acid recognition. 

RNA polymerase, and the triphosphates of the purine ribonucleosides, uridine, and cytidine, and otherwise the same conditions, will prime the synthesis of RNA. The amounts of synthetic DNA or RNA are many fold greater than the amount of primer DNA the DNA product is nearly the same in most measurable ways as the primer DNA. The efficiency of the DNA in initiating these syntheses is known as the primer activity of the DNA, and can be affected by alterations of the bases which compose the nucleic acid, and by other factors. 

The formation and stoichiometry of the polymer complex between nucleic acid analogs are affected by two important factors. The first is the base-base distance in the polymer chain, represented as xA and yA in Fig. 17. This distance is one factor in intramolecular base-base interactions in the polymer chain, which also influences what can be called the penetration ability of the polymer. 

All of these factors dictate that great care must be exercised in relating well-defined crystal stmctures to the predominant stmctures that exist in solution. Moreover, it is important to remember that there is a wide range of microenvironments present in vivo, each of which would also be expected to affect the metal nucleic acid interactions in a fashion (superficially) analogous to a specific solvent or the absorption of the metal ions to a particular surface. ...
