Satisfactory performance is obtained with tubes having helical ribs on the inside surface, which generate a swirling flow. The resulting centrifugal action forces the water droplets toward the inner tube surface and prevents the formation of a steam film. The internally rifled tube maintains nucleate boiling at much higher steam temperature and pressure and with much lower mass velocities than those needed in smooth tubes. Modtilus Measurements Another SCC test technique is the use of changes of modulus as a measure of the damping capacity of a metal. It is known that a sample of a given test material containing cracks will have a lower effec tive modulus than does a sample of identical material free of cracks. The technique provides a rapid and reliable evaluation of the susceptibility of a sample material to SCC in a specific environment. The so-called internal friction test concept can also be used to detect and probe nucleation and progress of cracking and the mechanisms controlling it. [Pg.2436]

Evidence suggests that there is a threshold tensile stress at which void nucleation occurs and spall fracture initiates. Materials subject to transient internal tensions can support tensile stresses significantly in excess of this threshold level, however. Such behavior is a consequence of kinetics and inertia associated with the nucleation and growth of voids during spall. A fairly large body of experimental and theoretical literature on spall phenomena exists and many aspects of the effect are reasonably well understood. On one hand, inherent flaws or perturbations in a fracturing body, which are the sites of internal fracture nucleation, have been recognized as important in determining characteristic fracture spacing and, consequently, the nominal fragment size in a fracture event. Theoretical work based on a physical description of these material imperfections has been actively pursued (Curran et al., 1977 Grady and Kipp, 1980). [Pg.278]

The importance of inherent flaws as sites of weakness for the nucleation of internal fracture seems almost intuitive. There is no need to dwell on theories of the strength of solids to recognize that material tensile strengths are orders of magnitude below theoretical limits.
