Replacements for asbestos fibers are needed for components such as reactor core flooring, plumbing, and packaging. All the techniques discussed here involve the atomic nucleus. Three use neutrons, generated either in nuclear reactors or very high energy proton ajccelerators (spallation sources), as the probe beam. They are Neutron Diffraction, Neutron Reflectivity, NR, and Neutron Activation Analysis, NAA. The fourth. Nuclear Reaction Analysis, NRA, uses charged particles from an ion accelerator to produce nuclear reactions. The nature and energy of the resulting products identify the atoms present. Carbide-based cermets have particles of carbides of tungsten, chromium, and titanium. Tungsten carbide in a cobalt matrix is used in machine parts requiring very high hardness such as wire-drawing dies, valves, etc. Chromium carbide in a cobalt matrix has high corrosion and abrasion resistance it also has a coefficient of thermal expansion close to that of steel, so is well-suited for use in valves. Titanium carbide in either a nickel or a cobalt matrix is often used in high-temperature applications such as turbine parts. Cermets are also used as nuclear reactor fuel elements and control rods. Fuel elements can be uranium oxide particles in stainless steel ceramic, whereas boron carbide in stainless steel is used for control rods. [Pg.10]

Experience from the 1986 Chernobyl reactor accident in the Ukraine shows the potential magnitude and impact of a terrorist attack on a nuclear power plant. The accident involved an explosion in a reactor that releases very high levels of radiation for miles surrounding the reactor site. Refined niobium metal is most useful as an alloy with other metals. It is used to produce special stainless steel alloys, to make high-temperature magnets, as special metals for rockets and missiles, and for high- and low-temperature-resistant ceramics. Stainless steel that has been combined with niobium is less hkely to break down under very high temperatures.
