Electron spin resonance (ESR) measures the absorption spectra associated with the energy states produced from the ground state by interaction with the magnetic field. This review deals with the theory of these states, their description by a spin Hamiltonian and the transitions between these states induced by electromagnetic radiation. The dynamics of these transitions (spin-lattice relaxation times, etc.) are not considered. Also omitted are discussions of other methods of measuring spin Hamiltonian parameters such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR), although results obtained by these methods are included in Sec. VI. [Pg.90]

The proton spin-lattice relaxation times for solvent water are strongly perturbed if the water is in rapid exchange with a paramagnet. In particular, Mn is a strong relaxer for water protons and thus nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy provides a sensitive probe for the presence of exchangeable water molecules bound to Mn in Mn proteins. [Pg.2560]

The spin-lattice relaxation time was measured with an ISSH-2-13 coherent nuclear quadrupole resonance spectrometer-relaxometer equipped with a Tesla BS 488 electromagnet (magnetic field strength is 1.6 x 105 A/m) to realize the... [Pg.502]

In the previous section, drug stability was shown to depend on the physical state of water in excipients. Detailed information on the physical state of water can be obtained by measuring the dynamics or the mobility of water molecules. The effect of water mobility on drug stability has been studied by determining water mobility in mixtures of water and polymers used as pharmaceutical excipients. Methods used include the measurement of spin-lattice relaxation time and spin-spinrelaxation time by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy as well as of dielectric relaxation time by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. [Pg.117]
