Nuclear fuel, preparation

Fluorides. Uranium fluorides play an important role in the nuclear fuel cycle as well as in the production of uranium metal. The dark purple UF [13775-06-9] has been prepared by two different methods neither of which neither have been improved. The first involves a direct reaction of UF [10049-14-6] and uranium metal under elevated temperatures, while the second consists of the reduction of UF [10049-14-6] by UH [13598-56-6]. The local coordination environment of uranium in the trifluoride is pentacapped trigonal prismatic with an 11-coordinate uranium atom. The trifluoride is... [Pg.331]

Carbides of the Actinides, Uranium, and Thorium. The carbides of uranium and thorium are used as nuclear fuels and breeder materials for gas-cooled, graphite-moderated reactors (see Nuclearreactors). The actinide carbides are prepared by the reaction of metal or metal hydride powders with carbon or preferably by the reduction of the oxides uranium dioxide [1344-57-6] UO2 tduranium octaoxide [1344-59-8], U Og, or thorium... [Pg.452]

In addition to these are studies prepared before President Carter stopped the GESMO (Generic Environmental Statement for Mixed Oxide) that addressed the chemical processing of fissionable material for the nuclear fuel cycle. Some references are Cohen (1975), Schneider (1982), Erdmann (1979), Fuliwood (1980), and Fullwood (1983). [Pg.428]

There is a close kinship between the chemical process industry and the nuclear electric power industry. In tact once the physics of nuclear reaction was established the rest is chemistiy and hc.it ii an.sfer. The word "reactor" is from chemistry for the location the reaction takes place.. nuclear reactor consists of a vessel in which a nuclear reaction heats water to make steam to drive a turbine o generate electricity. Thus the primary components are pipes, valves, pumps heat exchangers, and water purifiers similar to the components found in a chemical plant. Following the success of WASH-1400, PSA was used to analyze the chemical proce.ssmg of nuclear fuel and. aste preparation for disposal. [Pg.540]

Actinides occurrence and preparation. With the exception of U and Th, the availability of the actinides of the first half of the series ranges from the g to kg scale that of the elements of the second half of the series from the mg scale for Cf to the sub-mg scale for Es. Isotopes of Np, Pu, Am, Cm can be available as byproducts of nuclear fuel processing other elements such as Ac, Cf, Bk, Es can be obtained by irradiation of selected isotopes in high flux reactors, or by reprocessing large quantities of ore (Pa). [Pg.365]

These reports are based on 120 technical reports (here denoted by KBS TR) on different technical aspects of waste treatment and ground disposal. More than 70 university departments and consulting companies in Sweden and abroad have been engaged in the preparation of these reports. The research on storage of radioactive waste in the ground is still in progress, both within the Nuclear Fuel Safety Project but also within a Swedish-American joint project between Swedish Nuclear Fuel Supply Co(Svensk Karnbranslefdrsorjning AB, SKBF), Fack, S-10240 Stockholm, Sweden, and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Earth Science Division, University of California, Berkeley. [Pg.72]

The UFg used in producing nuclear fuels is prepared by reaction of uranium metal with chlorine trifluoride. Tell which atoms have been oxidized and which reduced, and balance the equation. [Pg.228]

It is with considerable gratification to the author that preparation of this chapter brought home the realization that in his professional lifetime isotope dilution has moved from a recondite technique used only by a few initiates into the mainstream of analytical science, making valuable contributions in a multitude of fields as disparate as the nuclear fuel cycle and the workings of the human body. [Pg.238]
