Nonylphenoxyacetic acid

Identification of a characteristic set of isomers with differently branched nonyl substitutions of poorly biodegradable nonylphenoxyacetic acid and nonylphen-oxyethoxy acetic acid in sewage effluents was identified with high-resolution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HRGS-MS) and quantitative determination was done with HPLC [245]. [Pg.348]

Inaba reports that AE-type nonionics may be isolated from environmental waters by toluene extraction (113). The presence of salts, as in sea water, will cause the co-extraction of anionic siufactants and other materials, so that a preliminary ion exchange step may be required prior to extraction. Liquid-liquid extraction with methylene chloride is generally applicable to isolation of ethoxylated surfactants from water (114). Liquid-liquid extraction with chloroform or methylene chloride was found to be equivalent to sublation in concentrating the NPE metabolite nonylphenoxyacetic acids from water. A pH of 2 is suitable for the extraction (35). Sublation was superior for analysis of sewage, since emulsion formation was minimized (115). [Pg.565]

The carboxylates of the 1- and 2-mole EO adducts of nonylphenol can be made by oxidizing the corresponding NPE with chromic acid in sulftiric acid. In a similar manner, carboxylated PEG can be prepared by oxidation of commercially available PEG with acidic potassium dichromate (86,99). An alternative path to nonylphenoxyacetic acid and its ethoxyacetic and diethoxyacetic acid analogs is reaction of nonylphenol and nonylphenol low mole ethoxylates with chloroacetate under alkaline conditions (51,94,100,140). Ring-brominated analogs are made by reaction of the isolated standard with bromine water (94). 2,4,4-Trimethyl-2-pentanol can be produced by hydration of 2,4,4-trimethylpentene (94). [Pg.575]
