Nodax, under development by Proctor Gamble, is made from renewable sources. It consists of a family of copolymers of 3-hydroxybutyrate and one or more 3-hydroxyalkanoates having a longer side chain, where the side chain has anywhere from 3 to 20 carbon atoms. The structures thereby resemble linear low density polyethylene, with the 3-hydroxybutyrate units providing a basis for crystallinity and the other units introducing structural irregularity and reduced crystallinity. Nodax can be converted into sheets, molded articles, foams, films, fibers, and nonwoven fabrics, and is both biodegradable and compostable.

Erosion control fabrics are designed to stabilize soil on barren ground, usually slopes and hiUs. These fabrics, usually woven or nonwoven, are designed to maintain the soil and prevent its ronoval until vegetation can be established, which will prevent further erosion. Ideally, the fabrics will biodegrade so that removal of them upon restabilization of the soil, usually within six months to two years, depending upon the climate, will not be necessary. 

Thus the target for biodegradable nonwovens is to replace synthetic fibers with biodegradable fibers in the disposable nonwovens. Flexural rigidity and absorption properties of the cotton/(Eastar/PP) nonwovens were also studied. Results show that the nonwovens have good flexural rigidity and absorbency, which indicate that the nonwoven materials may be used for medical and sanitary applications. However, one has to remember that PP component in the bicomponent fiber is not biodegradable this puts this fabric in the category of many other cotton/binder nonwovens that may have PP or PET as binder fibers.
