It seems that indeed the answers to many fundamental questions are obtained, at least in qualitative form. Perhaps, the most important exception are thixotropic phenomena. There are many of them and the necessary systematization and mathematical generalization are absent here. Thus, it is not clear how to describe the effect of an amplitude on nonlinear dynamic properties. It is not clear what is the depth and kinetics of the processes of fracture-reduction of structure, formed by a filler during deformation. Further, there is no strict description of wall effects and a friction law for a wall slip is unknown in particular. 

When required, combined with the use of computers, the finite element analysis (FEA) method can greatly enhanced the capability of the structural analyst to calculate displacement and stress-strain values in complicated structures subjected to arbitrary loading conditions. In its fundamental form, the FEA technique is limited to static, linear elastic analysis. However, there are advanced FEA computer programs that can treat highly nonlinear dynamic problems efficiently.

Michael Thompson is currently Editor of the Royal Society s Philosophical Transactions (Series A). He graduated from Cambridge with first class honours in Mechanical Sciences in 1958, and obtained his PhD in 1962 and his ScD in 1977. He was a Fulbright researcher in aeronautics at Stanford University, and joined University College London (UCL) in 1964. He has published four books on instabilities, bifurcations, catastrophe theory and chaos, and was appointed professor at UCL in 1977. Michael Thompson was elected FRS in 1985 and was awarded the Ewing Medal ofthe Institution of Civil Engineers. He was a senior SERC fellow and served on the IMA Council. In 1991 he was appointed director of the Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics.

In the operation of BWRs, especially when operating near the threshold of instability, the stability margin of the stable system and the amplitude of the limit cycle under unstable condition become of importance. A number of nonlinear dynamic studies of BWRs have been reported, notably in an International Workshop on Boiling Water Reactor Stability (1990).
