Noninvasive perfusion imaging

The primary goal of noninvasive imaging tools in this patient population is the assessment of myocardial blood supply, which can be readily assessed by application of MR perfusion imaging. In combination with DE imaging and cine MRI, a comprehensive assessment of patient status is feasible including the extent of reversible perfusion deficits, the extent of infarcted myocardium, and the overall functional status (Fig. 21.11).

Skeletal muscle perfusion in mouse leg was determined quantitatively, dynamically and noninvasively by NMR arterial spin-labeled(ASL) imaging. It was shown that despite the small size of the animal, mouse muscle perfusion may be measured, at rest and in conditions of reactive hyperemia, using saturation inversion recovery sequence, a pulsed ASL variant combined with NMR imaging. 

Ventilation-peifiision scans may be helpful since a markedly abnormal pattern of patchy, matched ventilation and perfusion defects is often seen. Magnetic resonance imaging with hyperpolarized 3He, 99mTc-Technegas, and 133Xe dynamic SPECT have made possible the noninvasive reproducible measurement of structure-function relationship in small airways (10).
