In addition to its use as fibers, wood is also used in particulate form (as woodflour) in polymer composites. When used as woodflour, it acts as a filler rather than a reinforcement. Wood and plant fibers are available as non-woven fiber mats and these are the most widely used preforms for composite reinforcement. Lignocellulosic fibers may also be spun into yarn which can be used to make preforms of woven fabrics and noncrimp fabrics. Woven fabrics are mostly used for textile applications while non-crimp fabrics of flax fibers have recently been introduced specifically for use as reinforcement... [Pg.329]

Before the composite formation, the CFY sensors integrated into the triaxially reinforcement noncrimp fabric structures (used as the outmost layers of the turbine blade) are contacted for the purpose of interconnection with logging cables of conventional measuring instmments. The contacting is realized by clamping CFY ends between... [Pg.341]

Textile structures can be divided into two- and three-dimensional structures. Most woven fabrics and knits as well as noncrimp fabrics, braids, and nonwovens belong in the first group (Fig. 1.13). For complex, mainly technical products, three-dimensional structures are an interesting alternative to conventional products, namely 3-D wovens, knits, and braids. [Pg.17]

For various applications, carbon fiber staple yarns are processed into woven and noncrimp fabrics, which are used for building components and as prepregs. Textile structures of carbon filaments are used in composite plastics and with fiber-reinforced concrete. Furthermore, short fibers down to 6 mm in length are used. [Pg.76]
