Non-stacked layers

Before the similar situation in cylindrite can be treated, we have to describe the special type of layer stacking disorder which is inherent to non-commensurate layer structures. When two types of layers are semi-commensurate (or nearly so) and non-modulated in the semi-commensurate intralayer direction (e.g. b), the layer B can be placed on layer A in a number of ways with equivalent layer match, mutually displaced by the translation mb for the primitive mesh A, or mbAl2 + c tl in the more usual case of a centred layer mesh m stays within the range of the vernier repeat (n) of the layer A. Several of these positions will not coincide with each other, depending on the ratio of to ng in the semi-commensurate direction The same will in general be true for the positions of layer A on layer B, but this time the positions will be determined by the vectors of the layer B. [Pg.147]

The [BC2Nj]n nanofibres/nanotubes, produced by pyrolysis, generate non-cyhndrical layer-by-layer tubes, most of which (> 90%) appeared to consist of stacked cones in which the general cone-cone surface separation is close to that of graphite. The cone axes appear to be roughly aligned with the overall nano-... [Pg.221]

Figure 3.12 shows an important characteristic of the multi-layer stack, i.e. the repeat period 4, which consists of the combined thickness of one crystalline lamella and one non-crystalline region between lamellae and is usually of the order of tens of nanometers. Other important questions about the stacks are the following, (a) What are the individual thicknesses of the crystalline and non-crystalline layers (b) What is the nature of the non-crystalline material (c) Can the crystalline and non-crystalline layers... [Pg.129]

In a spin-diffusion experiment on a sample of polyethylene the magnetisation of the crystalline phase was found to have risen to 0.57 of its maximum value 120 ms after the start of the FID. Assuming that the magnetisation of this phase is essentially zero at the start of the FID and that the appropriate diffusion coefficient Z) = 8.3 x 10 m s , calculate the mean thickness of the non-crystalline layers, assuming that the pol5mier consists of lamellar stacks of crystalline and non-crystalline material. [Pg.132]

Similar to polyethylenes the morphology of these polymers is also described as a lamellar stack of crystalline and non-crystalline layers. This so-called two phase model is applied for the interpretation of X-ray diffraction data as well as for heat of fusion or density measurements. However, it is well known that several mechanical properties, as well as the relaxation strength at the glass transition temperature, cannot be described by such a simplistic two-phase approach, as discussed by Gupta [59]. Prom standard DSC measurements [60], dielectric spectroscopy, shear spectroscopy [61], NMR [62], and other techniques probing molecular dynamics at the glass transition (a-relaxation) temperature, the measured relaxation strength is always smaller than expected... [Pg.313]

The morphologies shown in Figirre 9.20 are somewhat idealized. In fact, the oxide scales resulting from simrrltaneous oxidation of alloys often have a more complicated structure several stacked layers, presence of precipitates in the adjacent metal zone due to internal oxidation, presence of metal islands in the oxide films, formation of pores and of cavities, etc. In addition, the oxidation of an alloy often exhibits non steady state behavior involving an initial phase during which the structure and the composition of the scales change transient oxidation). [Pg.392]

A nanostore is a single-chip computer that includes 3-D stacked layers of dense silicon non-volatile memory with a layer of compute cores and a network interface. A large number of individiral nanostores can cottununicate over a simple interconnect and run a data-parallel execution environment like MapReduce to support large-scale distributed data-centric workloads. The two most impor-... [Pg.35]

Surface modified by self-assembling monolayers (SAMs) exhibited similar properties as LB films. In a report using gold substrate and functionalized thiol surface layer material, the cores of triphenylene derivatives with 1-2 thiols attached to their side-chains align homogeneously and form domains of colunmar stacks with different in-plane orientation [17], A homeotropic alignment was obtained for derivatives with thioethers attached to the core. The situation with terminal thiols attached to more than two side chains per molecule resulted in non-uniform layers. [Pg.256]

The number of measurable layers of a stack is limited only by the optical contrast between the different layers. In practice stacks of ten layers and more can be analyzed by ellipsometry. Further advantages of ellipsometry compared with other metrological methods are the non-invasive and non-destructive character of the optical method, the low energy entry into the sample, the direct measurement of the dielectric function of materials, and the possibility of making the measurement in any kind of optical transparent environment. [Pg.265]
