Non-linear Processes

The polarizability expresses the capacity of a system to be deformed under the action of electric field it is the first-order response. The hyperpolarizabilities govern the non linear processes which appear with the strong fields. These properties of materials perturb the propagation of the light crossing them thus some new phenomenons (like second harmonic and sum frequency generation) appear, which present a growing interest in instrumentation with the lasers development. The necessity of prediction of these observables requires our attention. [Pg.261]

The term time constant is more or less equivalent to process time, characteristic time and relaxation time. Relaxation time is often used in physics, but is applied only to first-order processes and refers to the time for a process to reach a certain fraction of completion. This fraction is given by (1-1/e) = 0.63, which for a first-order process, as shown previously, is reached at a time t = X. Time constants also may be used to describe higher order processes and also non-linear processes. In these cases the time constant is defined as the time in which the process proceeds to a specified fraction of the resultant steady state. Higher order processes are often more elegantly described by a series of time constants. [Pg.89]

The expected Cmax and AUC for each of the profiles are listed in Table 3. The profiles are predicted to show an acceptable range of Cmax values with around 20% difference between the fast and medium formulations and between the medium and slow formulations. The predicted differences in AUC are only related to the slightly different content of the three formulations, reflected in the Finf values (100% for the fast formulation and 102% for the other formulations). Normally, AUC is not expected to be rate-dependent unless there is some non-linear process involved in the disposition of the drug or drug release or absorption is very slow compared to gastrointestinal transit time. Given the predicted Cmax differences, these three formulations are appropriate choices for an IVIVC study as they show acceptable in vitro and predicted in vivo differences. [Pg.293]

Classical liquid chromatography based on adsorption- desorption was essentially a non-linear process where the time of retardation (retention time) and the quantitative response depend on the position on the adsorption isotherm. Essentially, it was a preparative technique the aim was to obtain the components present in the sample in pure form which could then be submitted to further chemical or physical manipulations [3]. [Pg.3]

The narrow bandwidth that can be matched with the maximum absorption of the initiator and thus eliminates undesirable secondary photochemical reactions non-linear processes may however become important at high power densities. [Pg.222]

Positive cooperativity is a basic characteristic of molecular amplification devices, since once initiated, the subsequent steps of the assembly are facilitated. It represents a non-linear process and confers features of an error filter, only the correct input will in principle lead to the cooperative structure generation. [Pg.142]

Coherent light sources are characterized by a spectral intensity distribution E(oj) and a frequency-dependent phase 0(w). According to first-order perturbation theory, linear absorption probabilities are given by the overlap between the spectrum of the light source E(w) and the optical transition, and are independent of the phase function In non-linear processes (2nd... [Pg.51]

Sorption of organic contaminants onto aquifer solids is frequently described as a partitioning process, where the hydrophobic organic compound partitions into natural organic material associated with the aquifer solids [8]. Sorption can be characterized as either an equilibrium or rate-limited phenomenon. Equilibrium sorption can be modeled as either a linear or non-linear process. Equilibrium sorption may be assumed when the flow of groundwater and other processes affecting contaminant transport are slow compared to the rate of sorption. In this event the sorption of the contaminant can be considered instantaneous. If we assume equilibrium sorption, the relationship between sorbed and aqueous contaminant concentrations may be described by a sorption isotherm. [Pg.37]

A useful (also extreme) counterpart to the also idealized linear geometry is fractal geometry which plays a key role in many non-linear processes.280 281 If one measures the length of a fractal interface with different scales, it can be seen that it increases with decreasing scale since more and more details are included. The number which counts how often the scale e is to be applied to measure the fractal object, is not inversely proportional to ebut to a power law function of e with the exponent d being characteristic for the self-similarity of the structure d is called the Hausdorff-dimension. Diffusion limited aggregation is a process that typically leads to fractal structures.283 That this is a nonlinear process follows from the complete neglect of the back-reaction. The impedance of the tree-like metal in Fig. 76 synthesized by electrolysis does not only look like a fractal, it also shows the impedance behavior expected for a fractal electrode.284... [Pg.159]

The frequency dependence of the polarizability governs the change of refractive index with the frequency of the light source. In Eq. (11), F becomes Fa and we can write a either as a(o)) or a(-03o Oi) with 0) = 0) and 0)1 = ox The theory for a(0)) was developed early on and there have been many calculations this is the linear effect. Computation of y(co), the nonlinear property, is a fairly recent departure and it is spurred on by the potential that non-linear processes have for commercial exploitation. [Pg.141]

The first and last terms correspond to oscillating polarizations that emit light at twice the frequency of E and 2 respectively, and the other two terms correspond to sum- and difference-firequency mixing of the two frequencies. In general, experiments can be conducted in such a way as to strongly favour one non-linear process above the others. However, if this is not possible, steps can be taken to detect the ouqmt of a single process through the use of appropriate filters, spatial separation of the emitted beams and choice of detector. [Pg.27]

In the expressions (184) and (184b) the second, temperature-dependent term defines the Born effect due to superposition of the two non-linear processes of second-order distortion and reorientation of permanent dipole moments in the electric field. Buckingham et al. determined nonlinear polarizabflities If and c for numerous molecules by Kerr effect measurements in gases as a function of temperature and pressure. It is here convenient to use the virial expansion of the molar Kerr constant, when the first and second virial coefficients Ak and Bk result immediately from equations (177), (178), and (184). Meeten et al. determined nonlinear molecular polarizabilities by measuring K in liquids as a function of temperature. [Pg.359]
