High performance Hquid chromatography (hplc) may be used to determine nitroparaffins by utilizing a standard uv detector at 254 nm. This method is particularly appHcable to small amounts of nitroparaffins present, eg, in nitro alcohols (qv), which caimot be analyzed easily by gas chromatography. Suitable methods for monitoring and deterrnination of airborne nitromethane, nitroethane, and 2-nitropropane have been pubUshed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) (97). Ordinary sorbant tubes containing charcoal are unsatisfactory, because the nitroparaffins decompose on it unless the tubes are held in dry ice and analyzed as soon after collection as possible. 

Nitromethane. The industrial method of producing NM is based on a vapor phase reaction of propane and 70% nitric acid. The reaction is carried out at around 410° and 115—175psi press. In essence the production of NM involves five stepst 1) nitration 2) product recovery ...

The rate enhancement of the Diels-Alder reaction in LP-NM has been attributed to the high dipole moment of nitromethane (3.40 D) in comparison with diethyl ether (1.33 D). 

Lamellar, single crystals of cellulose triacetate, precipitated from nitromethane with butyl alcohol, were studied by X-ray and electron diffraction. Only the crystals containing the mother liquor, or moistened with nitromethane, showed rich diffraction details. From stretched and annealed fibers, it was found that the unit cell is tetragonal, with a = fe = 21.15A (2.115 nm), and c = 41.36 A (4.136 nm). 

A sample, m.p. 184-185°, prepared by recrystallization of the product from nitromethane, gives satisfactory elemental analytical data. Its nm.r. spectrum (60 MHz, dimethyl sulfoxide-da) reveals that the compound exists in the iminopyra-... 

The primary photochemical reaction for nitromethane in the gas phase is well supported by experiments to be the dissociation of the C—N bond (equation 98). The picosecond laser-induced fluorescence technique has shown that the ground state NO2 radical is formed in <5 ps with a quantum yield of 0.7 in 264-nm photolysis of nitromethane at low pressure120. The quantum yield of NO2 varies little with wavelength, but the small yields of the excited state NO2 radical increase significantly at 238 nm. In a crossed laser-molecular beam study of nitromethane, it was found that excitation of nitromethane at 266 nm did not yield dissociation products under collision-free conditions121.

In recent years liq Nitromethane, NM, although rarely used as a practical expl, has been studied from the point of view of initiation and detonation theory probably more than any other expl, liq, solid or gas. Some of these studies are discussed in sections 4 5... 

Another class of LE are the Nitromethanes. As already mentioned, NM is probably the most thoroughly studied expl. Tetranitro-methane, TNM, is expl by itself, and forms very powerful and very sensitive mixts with liq fuels (See below)...
