Nitrogen oxides projected emissions

The OECD project was completed in 1977. The final report 2) showed that the air over the central parts of Europe was substantially polluted. The countries on the continent received as much sulphur pollutants from neighbouring countries as from their own sources, and most of the increased acidity of the precipitation in the surrounding countries was due to the emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the central parts of the area (3,4,5). 

The United States Department of Energy sponsors many research projects, particularly into next-generation pressurized fluid bed combustion combined-cycle power plants. The goal is to design plants with a net system efficiency of more than 50 percent, extremely low sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions well below 2010 emission limits, and at a power-generation cost of three-quarters by a conventional coal-fired power plant. The European Union similarly sponsors research in this area, as does Japan and other developed or developing countries. 

Air Pollution. Particulates and sulfur dioxide emissions from commercial oil shale operations would require proper control technology. Compliance monitoring carried out at the Unocal Parachute Creek Project for respirable particulates, oxides of nitrogen, and sulfur dioxide from 1986 to 1990 indicate a +99% reduction in sulfur emissions at the retort and shale oil upgrading faciUties. No violations for unauthorized air emissions were issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency during this time (62).
