Nitrogen importance

Shortly after natural gas prices spiked, nitrogen imports into the US reached record levels. When nitrogen prices failed to keep up with gas prices, nitrogen producers began curtailing production and imports became necessary. When prices for natural gas and nitrogen products decreased, imports returned to normal levels...

As constituents of proteins the amino-acids are important constituents of the food of animals. Certain amino-acids can be made in the body from ammonia and non-nitrogenous sources others can be made from other amino-acids, e.g. tyrosine from phenylalanine and cystine from methionine, but many are essential ingredients of the diet. The determination of the elemental composition of a petroleum cut is of prime importance because it provides a quick means of finding out the quality of a given cut or determining the efficiency of a refining process. In fact, the quality of a cut generally increases with the H/C ratio and in all cases, with a decrease in hetero-element (nitrogen, sulfur, and metals) content. 

Several instniments have been developed for measuring kinetics at temperatures below that of liquid nitrogen [81]. Liquid helium cooled drift tubes and ion traps have been employed, but this apparatus is of limited use since most gases freeze at temperatures below about 80 K. Molecules can be maintained in the gas phase at low temperatures in a free jet expansion. The CRESU apparatus (acronym for the French translation of reaction kinetics at supersonic conditions) uses a Laval nozzle expansion to obtain temperatures of 8-160 K. These teclmiques have provided important infonnation on reactions pertinent to interstellar-cloud chemistry as well as the temperature dependence of reactions in a regime not otherwise accessible. In particular, infonnation on ion-molecule collision rates as a ftmction of temperature has proven valuable m refining theoretical calculations. 

Pollution control such as the reduction of nitrogen oxides, halocarbons and hydrocarbons from flue gases [37] is another important field of plasma-assisted chemistry using non-thennal plasmas.
