Nitrogen fixation comparison

In a comparison of the yield and nitrogen fixing ability of white clover, red clover and lucerne, Loges, et al. (2000) found higher yields of harvestable dry matter and therefore of nitrogen fixation for red clover and lucerne than for white clover, but white clover, of course, is a perennial. [Pg.22]

Hydrazo compounds are reported as intermediates in nitrogen fixation by molybdenum-containing nitrogenase. Tungsten chemistry has been reported for comparison with molybdenum. Addition of methyl lithium to [W(NPh)Me3Cl] followed by 1 equiv. of hydrazine afforded [ W(NPh)Me3 2(//-r/1,r/1-NH2NH2)(/u- 72, 7 -NHNH)] in good yield.82... [Pg.539]

Figure 9 Comparison of the correlation of natural a C with silicate (A) and potential alkalinity (PALK = [alkalinity+ nitrate] x 35/salinity) (B) using the GEOSECS global data. Samples from high southern latitudes are excluded from the silicate relation. The presence of tritium was used to surmise the presence of bomb-A C. The somewhat anomalous high PALK values from the Indian Ocean are from upwelling-high productivity zones and may be influenced by nitrogen fixation and/or particle flux. It is interesting, that the substrate specificity of nitrogenases is low in comparison with other enzymes. They also reduce acetylene (to ethylene), hydrazine [39], cyanide and azide. [40] From this, and from the presumably very high biological age of the enzyme system, W. S. Silver and John R. Postgate [41 ] con-duded that the enzyme s original purpose was not nitrogen fixation, but cyanide detoxification in the biosphere of Precambrian bacteria. [Pg.173]

Interestingly, it has been reported that common bean plants inoculated with a phaC mutant of R. etli show an increased nitrogen-fixation capacity and enhanced growlh in comparison with plants inoculated with the wild-type bacterium (CevaUos et al. 1996). An important difference between S. meliloti and/ , etli is that in the former. [Pg.48]

In all these studies which were carried out over the five-year period, 1904-1909, the effects of catalysts on these fixations of nitrogen were investigated. For the barium compounds, iron oxide acted as a catalyst. For the titanium nitrides, various other metal oxides as well as a number of inorganic salts proved to be effective. For the silicium nitrides and aluminum nitrides, again metal oxides and salts had beneficial effects but in other proportions and to another extent than found for the titanium nitrides. Often, two or more catalysts were added to the reaction mixtures with beneficial effects, but no systematic quantitative comparisons were carried out at this time. Table I lists some of these experiments. [Pg.84]

We wiU treat external N loading (riverbome N, atmospheric deposition, N2 fixation), N uptake by phytoplankton, denitrification and N losses to sediments and adjacent seas. It would be impossible to treat nitrogen in isolation. Thus, the question of nitrogen versus phosphorus as the hmiting nutrient will be discussed. Comparisons between the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, an inland sea with characteristics very different from the Baltic Sea, will be made at the end of the... [Pg.683]
