Bacteria nitrifying

Molybdenum. Molybdenum is a component of the metaHoen2ymes xanthine oxidase, aldehyde oxidase, and sulfite oxidase in mammals (130). Two other molybdenum metaHoen2ymes present in nitrifying bacteria have been characteri2ed nitrogenase and nitrate reductase (131). The molybdenum in the oxidases, is involved in redox reactions. The heme iron in sulfite oxidase also is involved in electron transfer (132). [Pg.387]

When organics containing reduced nitrogen are degraded, they usually produce ammonium, which is in equilibrium with ammonia. As the pK for NH3 NH4" is 9.3, the ammonium ion is the primary form present in virtually all biological treatment systems, as they operate at pH < 8.5 and usually in the pH range of 6.5-7.5. In aerobic reactions, ammonium is oxidized by nitrifying bacteria (nitrosomonas) to nitrite... [Pg.2213]

Nitrite is a weak reducing agent and is oxidized to nitrate by strong chemical oxidants or by nitrifying bacteria. It also oxidizes reduced substances. [Pg.293]

In oxic seawater, ammonium released during the remineralization of organic matter is readily oxidized to nitrite and then to nitrate by the actions of nitrifying bacteria. Thus, ammonium and nitrite concentrations in oxic seawater tend to be much lower than nitrate, so tracking the nitrate concentration is an effective measure of how much organic retnineralization has occurred. [Pg.247]

Nitrification The microbial oxidation of ammonium to nitrite and then to nitrate by Oj. In the ocean, this process is mediated by nitrifying bacteria. [Pg.882]

Allelopathic effects of juglone on nitrifying bacteria. I am unaware of any reports dealing specifically with juglone as an inhibitor of nitrification, but there have been several reports of inhibition of nitrification in grassland and a few reports Indicating inhibition in forest soil. The causal agents in both situations have been... [Pg.196]
