Nitric acid recovery

Acid waste streams are sent through a nitric acid recovery process, and then to a secondary plutonium recovery anion exchange process. The acid waste streams are then sent to waste treatment. 

Acid waste streams are processed through nitric acid recovery and then sent to a secondary plutonium recovery process which uses anion exchange. Acid, basic, and laundry waste streams are sent to waste treatment. A discussion of the process steps shown on Figure 1 follows. 

Dehairs et al. [78] describe a method for the routine determination ofbarium in seawater using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Barium is separated from major cations by collection on a cation exchange column. The barium is removed from this resin with nitric acid. Recoveries are greater than 99%.

M Corp. developed the Empore Strontium Rad Disks allowing the fixing of strontium by simple filtration of the water sample. No preconcentration step is required. Samples are acidified in 2-4 M nitric acid. Recoveries greater than 85 % have been observed for filtered volumes up to 3 These disks contain a strontium-selective crown ether extractant bonded to a solid silica support inserted in an inert PTFE matrix. ... 

Nitric acid recovery included the recovery of the add vapours from nitrating installations and all tanks, metering tanks and stabilizers holding nitric add. These vapours were led by means of fume ducts from the nitration plant and by suction pipes from the tanks into towers, where they were sprayed with water or with dilute nitric acid, to produce 50% nitric acid.

Another single-stage mixer-settler is used for the kerosene extraction of dissolved and entrained TBP from the first-colunm rafi ate. The quantity of entrained solvent before this treatment is rather high, sufficiently so for there to be a tendency for explosions to occur during subsequent distillation of the raffinate for nitric acid recovery. After treatment, the TBP content is reduced to 0-2 g/1. The recovered TBP is withdrawn from the plant at a concentration of 10 per cent in the kerosene wash, and made up to 33 5 per cent with fresh TBP for re-use in the extraction process. 

The hot exhaust gases first pass through sintered stainless-steel filters of a conventional type, which can be blown back with hot air at intervals. They then transfer part of their heat to incoming air, in a heat exchanger, and are finally fed to a nitric acid recovery system which is common to other plants.
