In the method for determining chlorine in chlorobutyl and other chlorine-containing polymers, [6] the sample is combusted in a 1-2 litre oxygen-filled combustion flask containing 0.01 M nitric acid. After combustion, the flask is allowed to cool and 0.01 M silver nitrate added. The combustion solution containing silver chloride is evaluated... 

Although certain arsenic-containing polymers were obtainable by Method D, 1 (see Table IX-4), others were not. Polymers derived from dimethylarsinic acid had to be prepared by addition of the sodium salt of the acid to chromic nitrate in ethanol [Eq. (lX-42)] II) followed by reaction with sodium acetylacetonate.

The chlorine content can be determined by either chlorine elemental analysis or a potentiometric titration using a chloride-ion electrode. For titration, about 0.2 g. of polymer is heated in 3 ml. of pyridine at 100° for 2 hours. This suspension is then transferred to a 50-mi. beaker containing 30 ml. of aqueous 50% acetic acid and 5 ini. of concentrated nitric acid, and the resulting mixture is titrated against aqueous 0.1 N silver nitrate. 

Hence the slope of the plot of log[S] against log[M] must equal Cs-The concentration [S] of unreacted mercaptan regulator may be determined by amperometric titration with silver nitrate,or the combined sulfur in the polymer may be determined radiochemically using mercaptan containing S, and the unreacted mercaptan concentration [S] calculated by difference. This salt is used as an inhibitor for the polymerisation of butadiene. It seems to play its role very well when its concentration is lower than 0.5%. If the concentration is greater than 5%, a black precipitate forms which contains 80% of organic polymer containing nitrate and nitrite groups in the proportions of 2 1. This solid combusts spontaneously at 150 C even when there is no air. 

To assess suitability of plastic storage containers for distribution of silver nitrate, behaviour under fire exposure conditions of various polymers in contact with the salt was examined. All polymers tested burned vigorously. 

Liquid membrane electrodes utilize porous polymer materials, such as PVC or other plastics. An organic liquid ion exchanger immiscible with water contacts and saturates the membrane from a reservoir around the outside of the tube containing the water solution of the analyte and the silver-silver chloride wire. See Figure 14.10. Important electrodes with this design are the calcium and nitrate ion-selective electrodes.
