Technetium (Tc, [Kr]4 /65.vl), name and symbol after the Greek Tsxrmos (tech-nikos, artificial). Detected in Italy (1937) by Carlo Perrier and Emilio Segre in a sample of Mo which had been irradiated with deuterons at the E.O. Lawrence cyclotron in California. It was the first artificially produced element. [Pg.422]

Konrad Lorenz and Niko Tinbergen must be credited with providing the basic concepts and layout of ethology as a new discipline, defined as the biology of behavior. It stimulated research and basic concepts such as that of the template, the motor generator system, and self differentiation as well as phenomena such as imprinting which have been validated down to the neuronal and molecular levels. [Pg.2]

In 1973 Konrad Lorenz, Niko Tinbergen and Karl von Frisch were awarded the Nobel Prize. Shortly afterwards, Lorenz moved back to his home in Altenberg as emeritus6. [Pg.7]

Foremost in the analysis of the authors who deal with theoretical and quantum chemistry is the physical reductionism of chemistry seen from the perspectives of the chemists involved, and the competitive evolution of research schools in the various political systems of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany at mid-century. In his introduction, Nikos Psarros from a philosoph-... [Pg.5]

ALS herbicides. Two classes of ALS-inhibiting herbicides are the sulfonylurea herbicides, discussed in Sections 2.1.2.1 and 2.2.3.1, and the imidazolinone herbicides. A third class of ALS-inhibiting herbicides is the 1,2,4-triazolo [1,5-a]pyrimidine-2-sulfonanilides. The triazolopyrimidine sulfonanilides act by disrupting the biosynthesis of branched chain amino acids in plants. Representatives of this class of herbicides include florasulam (Boxer , Nikos ) [151], initially introduced in Belgium in 1999 and used for the postemergence control of broadleaf weeds in cereals and corn, and flumetsulam (Broadstrike ) [152], used alone or in combination with other herbicides for the control of broadleaf weeds in soybean and corn. [Pg.152]

The authors are grateful to Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., the State of Delaware Research Partnership, and the National Science Foundation PYI Award to HCF for providing funding for this project. We would also like to acknowledge Dr. Nikos Maris, who designed and constructed much of the equipment used in this research, and Dr. Alejandro Cabrera, who obtained and interpreted the XPS/Auger spectra. [Pg.186]
