In employing this method, an important precaution to take is to use a tip that has been ground smooth at the end and is free tom any nicks. In the case of liquids that do not wet the tip, r is the inside radius. Volatile liquids are studied in a closed system as described by Harkins and Brown [21] to minimize evaporation losses. [Pg.21]

German Nickel, Satan or Old Nick s and from kupfernickel. Old Nick s copper) Cronstedt discovered nickel in 1751 in kupfernickel (niccolite). [Pg.67]

Nickel is found as a constitutent in most meteorites and often serves as one of the criteria for distinguishing a meteorite from other minerals. Iron meteorites, or siderites, may contain iron alloyed with from 5 percent to nearly 20 percent nickel. Nickel is obtained commercially from pentlandite and pyrrhotite of the Sudbury region of Ontario, a district that produces about 30 percent of the world s supply of nicke. [Pg.67]

Film and sheeting materials test methods have been standardized by ASTM, DIN, and others. As with all materials, the test specimens must be carefiiUy prepared and conditioned. Thin-film specimens are vulnerable to nicks and tears which mar the results. Moisture and temperature can affect some materials. Common test methods are Hsted in Table 1. [Pg.373]

Don t scratch or nick any bearing, housing, or shaft contact surface. [Pg.164]

Check bore and face-end plates for nicked edges, deep scratches, or scoring. Stone or scrape if necessary, and polish with very fine aluminum oxide polishing paper. [Pg.756]

For dc input voltages that are more than 100 VDC, a layer of Mylar tape should be placed between primary and the secondary(ies) and between any multiple secondaries. One should not completely trust the insulation breakdown voltage rating of the magnet wire since it could nick during the winding process. [Pg.52]

An alloy of nickel was known in China over 2000 years ago, and Saxon miners were familiar with the reddish-coloured ore, NiAs, which superficially resembles CU2O. These miners attributed their inability to extract copper from this source to the work of the devil and named the ore Kupfemickel (Old Nick s copper). In 1751 A. F. Cronstedt isolated an impure metal from some Swedish ores and, identifying it with the metallic component of Kupfemickel, named the new metal nickel . In 1804 J. B. Richter produced a much purer sample and so was able to determine its physical properties more accurately. [Pg.1144]

We employed malononitrile and l-crotonoyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazole as donor and acceptor molecules, respectively. We have found that this reaction at room temperature in chloroform can be effectively catalyzed by the J ,J -DBFOX/Ph-nick-el(II) and -zinc(II) complexes in the absence of Lewis bases leading to l-(4,4-dicya-no-3-methylbutanoyl)-3,5-dimethylpyrazole in a good chemical yield and enantio-selectivity (Scheme 7.47). However, copper(II), iron(II), and titanium complexes were not effective at all, either the catalytic activity or the enantioselectivity being not sufficient. With the J ,J -DBFOX/Ph-nickel(II) aqua complex in hand as the most reactive catalyst, we then investigated the double activation method by using this catalyst. [Pg.291]

Care should be taken to avoid kinking a wire rope since a kink can be cause for removal of the wire rope or damaged section. Wire ropes should not be struck with any object, such as a steel hammer, derrick hatchet, or crowbar, that may cause unnecessary nicks or bruises. Even a soft metal hammer can damage a rope. Therefore, when it is necessary to crowd wraps together, any such operation should be performed with the greatest care and a block of wood should be interposed between the hammer and rope. [Pg.584]

Check slip areas for longitudinal and transverse cracks and sharp notches. Check tool Joints for wear, galls, nicks, washes, fins, fatigue cracks at root of threads, or other items that would affect the pressure holding capacity or stability of the Joint. [Pg.765]

Use proper handling practices for equipment—avoid damaging protective film, avoid nicks or scratches, etc. [Pg.1272]

Check both mnning faces of the seal (seal ring and insert) and be sure there are no nicks or scratches. Imperfections of any kind on either of these faces will cause leaks. [Pg.952]

Nicks, scratches, or gouge marks on a pulley can cut into a belt. Dirt abrades the belting material and wear grooves cause a belt to bottom-out in the groove, resulting in slippage and ultimate damage to the belt. [Pg.973]
