It has recently been shown that alkyl sulfoxides are good solvents for transition metal halides, and many adducts can be isolated 42, 84, 167, 227, 231). Nickel perchlorate takes up six dimethyl sulfoxide ligands, but the chloride apparently only three. It has been shown from the reflectance spectrum and from the high magnetic moment 42) that this compound should be formulated as [Ni(DMSO)6][NiCl4], in which the anion is tetrahedral. Infrared spectra 43, 127) show that the dimethyl sulfoxide coordination is through oxygen. Similar compounds are found with tetrahydro-thiophenoxide 84) ... 

Other salts of nickel also absorb ammonia. The hexammine of nickel perchlorate, [Ni(NH3)6](C104)2, may be mentioned, as this substance has been suggested as a delicate test for nickel.3... 

Another example has been found in the author s laboratory. In the course of studies on the synthesis of metal-olefin complexes by means of cathodic reduction in dry organic mediums, a variety of linear oligomers were prepared on the nickel atom formed at the platinum cathode in electrolytic solution (32). The solution contained tetracispyridine nickel perchlorate or nickel dichloride and butadiene in ethanol or dimethoxye-thane, using tetrabutylammonium perchlorate as an electrolyte. 

Most of the complexes were conveniently prepared by the reaction in ethanol of the appropriate ligand with hydrated nickel perchlorate which had sometimes been dehydrated previously by stirring it with an excess of 2,2-dimethoxypropane or triethyl orthoformate. It must be remembered that transition metal perchlorate complexes with amines are potentially hazardous and can explode even under mild conditions. Safety precautions must be used in preparations Ni(C104)2(H20)2 has been prepared by carefully heating the hexahydrate under vacuum at about 100 °C.1584... 

An interesting series of reactions were carried out starting from bis (cyclopentadienyl)nickel and secondary phosphite esters (Scheme 24).1713 Finally, the mixed-ligand complex [Pt (MeO)2PO 2diphos] can act by itself as a ligand towards nickel perchlorate giving the mixed metal oligomer (225).1714...
