Urease is a very unusual enzyme in the sense that it contains an atom of nickel that is required for activity. Many enzymes contain metal ions but very few have nickel as that metal. Incidentally, urease is not an easy enzyme to crystaUize. I tried it as a graduate student many years ago and developed high regard for the skills of James Sumner. 

In 1805 James Soweiby received a piece of meteoric iron which Captain Barrow had found about two hundred miles within die Cape of Good Hope. When Smithson Tennant analyzed it, he found about 10 per cent of nickel in it. Mr. Sowerby had the metal hammered into a sword, which he presented to tire Emperor of Russia (128).

In this article, we will discuss the chemistry behind the du Pont adiponitrile process from a mechanistic viewpoint (10). It is not intended to be a comprehensive review of the hydrocyanation literature. We will restrict ourselves rather to homogeneous nickel-catalyzed hydrocyanation of olefins and will depend primarily on du Pont studies. Reviews which explore hydrocyanation in a more general way include those of Brown (77), Hubert and Puentes (72), and James (73). A general review of low-valent organo-nickel chemistry has been published by Jolly and Wilke (14).

In 1889 James Riley of Glasgow drew attention to the various special properties of nickel steels. This interested, amongst others, the American Naval Authorities, who, in 1891, purchased plain steel plates from British and French manufacturers and nickel steel plates from Le Creusot works of Schneider in France. On testing these, the last named proved much more resistant to projectile attack than the others. The results attracted world wide attention and the introduction of alloy steels for naval armour plate dates from this time.

Data are reported as percent nickel removed vs. pH isotherms. The James and Healy adsorption model as contained in the equilibrium computer model REDEQL2 was used to facilitate data analysis (20). In this way, an assessment of the combined effects of adsorption, complexation, and precipitation could be attempted. 

Nickel Adsorption onto Silica and Goethite. Figure 4 contains adsorption isotherms for nickel onto -Si02 and a-FeOOH as compared with precipitation which occurs in the absence of oxide surfaces. The lines in Figure 4, as with all figures in this chapter showing sorptive behavior, are predicted using the James and Healy model in conjunction... 

The results of the specific adsorption of nickel onto silica and goethite are in basic agreement with similar work reported for other metals (2, 18), The James and Healy model is capable of describing the interactions well. Similarly, when complexing ligands are added to nickel-silica systems the results can be adequately explained by a competition model in...

An important milestone was a patent from 1936 describing a method of producing multi-filament metal yam (James et al., 1936). Another patent from 1936 describes heated textiles incorporating iron, nickel, chromium or stainless metal wires (Grisley, 1936). A further patent describes the use of nickel-chrome strips to electrically heat socks (Costanzo, 1936).
