Lovelock: James

Lovelock, James Ephraim (bom 1919) English chemist He is known for proposing the Gaia hypothesis, in which he postulates that the earth functions as a kind of sujjerorganism. [Pg.604]

James and Martin soon developed a gas-density balance as a detector, but the sensitivity of GLC was increased enormously when the argon ionization detector was invented by James Lovelock it was he who also produced the electron capture detector in conjunction with S. R. Lipsky in 1959.162 The flame ionization detector originated in the same year.163 Another important advance in the early days of GLC was the introduction of capillary columns, which were first used by M. J. E. Golay in 1956.164165 The development of some of the first commercial instrumentation has been described.166167... [Pg.163]

In the early 1970s there was some concern that the sulfur cycle did not balance and that there needed to be additional global sources. When James Lovelock discovered DMS in the atmosphere of remote Ireland, this seemed a fine candidate to balance the sulfur cycle. The production of DMS in the oceans and its subsequent oxidation have been extensively investigated, particularly because of its role in producing sulfuric acid droplets that can act as an important cloud condensation nuclei in the remote marine atmosphere. [Pg.4527]

These words were the catalyst for a look into the history of the first seventy-five years of chromatography [1]. Their significance is emphasized when we recall that the ECD was invented by James E. Lovelock at the behest of Martin, once the Welch Professor at the University of Houston. Martin passed away in 2002 with little note of his contribution to chromatography. In their history of chromatography, L. S. Ettre and A. Zlatkis first gave a biographical sketch of Martin and then a narrative of his accomplishments. [Pg.22]

We also recognize the contributions of Dr. James. E. Lovelock, the inventor of the electron capture detector. [Pg.403]

Despite the wide margins for error, the fact that hydroxyl radicals are produced from both breathing and radiation allows a direct comparison to be made, at least in principle. James Lovelock used figures similar to... [Pg.124]

It is also easy to see that the space-time theory plays a central role in Vernadsky s definition of the biosphere as a bioinert natural body (Vernadsky, 1991, pp. 167, 168) and not as an organism or super-organism as it is represented in the concepts of James Lovelock (1996) and Elisabeth Sahtouris (1996). [Pg.17]

In contrast to Teilhard de Chardin and James Lovelock, Vernadsky never understood the biosphere as the totality of living organisms or as just a domain where life exists or as a living entity. In Vernadsky s theory, the biosphere appears as a bioinert selfregulating system and, at the same time, as a geological envelope including both living matter and its inert environment. Bioinert system is defined as a system. .which is made... [Pg.55]
