The capillary rise on a Wilhelmy plate (Section II-6C) is a nice means to obtain contact angles by measurement of the height, h, of the meniscus on a partially immersed plate (see Fig. 11-14) [111, 112]. Neumann has automated this technique to replace manual measurement of h with digital image analysis to obtain an accuracy of 0.06° (and a repeatability to 95%, in practice, of 0.01°) [108]. The contact angle is obtained directly from the height through... [Pg.363]

The polymer concentration profile has been measured by small-angle neutron scattering from polymers adsorbed onto colloidal particles [70,71] or porous media [72] and from flat surfaces with neutron reflectivity [73] and optical reflectometry [74]. The fraction of segments bound to the solid surface is nicely revealed in NMR studies [75], infrared spectroscopy [76], and electron spin resonance [77]. An example of the concentration profile obtained by inverting neutron scattering measurements appears in Fig. XI-7, showing a typical surface volume fraction of 0.25 and layer thickness of 10-15 nm. The profile decays rapidly and monotonically but does not exhibit power-law scaling [70]. [Pg.402]

The unstable situation caused when a spread him begins to dewet the surface has been studied [32, 33]. IDewetting generally proceeds from hole formation or retraction of the him edge [32] and hole formation can be a nucleation process or spinodal decomposition [34]. Brochart-Wyart and de Gennes provide a nice... [Pg.468]

One nice thing about H in mass-scaled coordinates is that it is identical to the Hamiltonian of a mass point movmg in two dimensions. This is convenient for visualizing trajectory motions or wavepackets, so the mass-scaled coordinates are commonly used for plotting data from scattering calculations. [Pg.974]

A nice example of this teclmique is the detennination of vibrational predissociation lifetimes of (HF)2 [55]. The HF dimer has a nonlinear hydrogen bonded structure, with nonequivalent FIF subunits. There is one free FIF stretch (v ), and one bound FIF stretch (V2), which rapidly interconvert. The vibrational predissociation lifetime was measured to be 24 ns when excitmg the free FIF stretch, but only 1 ns when exciting the bound FIF stretch. This makes sense, as one would expect the bound FIF vibration to be most strongly coupled to the weak intenuolecular bond. [Pg.1174]

The expense is justified, however, when tackling polymer chains, where reconstruction of an entire chain is expressed as a succession of atomic moves of this kind [121]. The first atom is placed at random the second selected nearby (one bond length away), the third placed near the second, and so on. Each placement of an atom is given a greater chance of success by selecting from multiple locations, as just described. Biasing factors are calculated for the whole multi-atom move, forward and reverse, and used as before in the Metropolis prescription. For fiirther details see [122, 123. 124. 125]. A nice example of this teclmique is the study [126. 127] of the distribution of linear and branched chain alkanes in zeolites. [Pg.2266]

These numbers indicate that it is very unlikely for the system to stay in C and D for more than 100 seconds, whereas for an oscillation A (-> D ot B C this may well be the case. In particular, these results are in nice agreement with Fig. 5 (right) there we observe an oscillation <-> > for about 200 seconds, whereas the longest stay in the neighborhood of the minimum C only lasts about 60 seconds. [Pg.114]

The drawing software comprises a comprehensive collection of standard tools to sketch 2D chemical structures. To specify all its facilities and tools would go far beyond the scope of this overview, but there are some nice features that are very useful for chemists so they are mentioned here briefly. One of these enables the prediction of H and NMR shifts from structures and the correlation of atoms with NMR peaks (Figure 2-127). lUPAC standard names can be generated... [Pg.139]

The molecular structures were rendered with good-quality shading on a blue background. Isosurfaces produced from cube files or checkpoint files also looked nice. Molecular vibrations can be animated on screen and vibrational displacement vectors displayed. The vibrational line spectrum may be displayed too, but the user has no control over the axes. There is no way to set the background color. The display can be saved using several image file formats. [Pg.350]
