Newspaper websites

The public needs to be kept informed of all waste management issues, including health and safety issues (and established mitigation measures), debris handling and disposal procedures, and normal municipal waste collection arrangements (where applicable). Public information can be disseminated in a number of ways including radios, local newspaper, website, television, letter drops, etc. Where possible, information should be prepared pre-disaster for ready dissemination when an earthquake strikes. 

Many daily newspapers now post their entire help-wanted section online as well as offering it in printed form. A growing number of newspapers also offer career-related websites that cater to their geographic area. For example, Careerpath.com (www.careerpath.com) is sponsored by a large group of newspapers and covers all geographic areas. 

Because career-related websites can be updated in real time, 24-hours-per-day, as companies have new job openings, they can be posted instantly, allowing job seekers to learn about and apply for openings immediately via e-mail or by visiting a specific website. Those who surf the Internet and continuously look for the newest ads posted online are more likely to land a job than those who sit home reading the newspaper and submitting their resume via U.S. mail.

The simple act of buying an online news article may involve numerous agents who provide search information, local and out-of-state newspaper pubhshers who have contractual obligations, reporters and columnists (who actually produce contents), payment service providers, banks, copyright clearing houses and so on. If Yahoo or Microsoft owned most Internet firms (publishers, payment services, search sites, etc.), a customer could possibly buy (or sell) products on the company s website and necessary transactions and payments could be handled by one firm. A retailer in a physical market... 

While online classified ads offered by newspapers are nothing more than online versions of their print ads, eBay offers features that consumers find convenient. Classified ads provide buyers only with contact information for purchasing a product. The buyers must make telephone calls and negotiate with the sellers. On eBay s website, all these necessary processes are automated and made convenient. Sometimes the formula of successful online business is simply to maximize the interactivity and real-time capabilities of the online medium itself. 

Such databases are also likely to have information on the companies whose advertisements were identified in magazines and newspapers. What are their sales and profits What are the patterns of growth Many companies make such information readily available on their Internet websites.

Knowledge of possible environmental factors, especially time- and location-dependent ones, must usually come from sources outside the individual, mainly from the mass media. In the next section we describe NASA s response to the January 2003 foam strike threat in some detail and offer an explanation of this response, drawing from data and theory at three levels of analysis.
