New exploration techniques, and new reference materials in support of them, were needed. One major change was in the use of ore pathfinder elements, rather than the ore elements themselves, for exploration purposes. For example, instead of analyzing samples for the primary Au ore element, samples were analyzed for As, Hg, and W pathfinders that pointed to hidden gold deposits. The pathfinder elements occur in association with ore veins, but have a much broader spread than the mineralized area itself. However, measurement of the pathfinder elements requires methods with better detection limits than were needed in earlier exploration programs, as the pathfinders typically are not as enriched as the ore elements, in comparison to baseline crustal levels.

A frontier which remains to be developed is catalytic asymmetric induction in radical addition to C=N bonds, although there are promising results which suggest asymmetric catalysis of broad scope may be on the horizon (for the first examples of asymmetric induction with catalyst turnover [171-173]). Hopefully this review will inspire new explorations in this direction.

The recent advances in MS and NMR instrumentation provide chemists with tools which enable them to rapidly solve the structure of complex saponins. This will hopefully open new explorations into the vast structure-activity relationship domain. To those who would be tempted to use their instrumental skills to illuminate the field, it is reminded, as a last remark, that the separation of saponins remains a major and primordial task which brings little glory to the actors. 

The authors of this set hope that readers appreciate the development of the sciences during the last century and the advancements occurring rapidly now in the 21 st century. The history teaches new explorers of the world the benefits of making careful observations, of pursuing paths and ideas that others have neglected or have not ventured to tread, and of always questioning the world around them. Curiosity is one of our most fundamental human instincts. Science, whether done as a career or as a hobby, is after all, an intensely human endeavor. 

To summarize, SC2B1.1C3.2 exhibits properties characteristic of GICs, and it can be considered to be the first boron and carbon mixed GIC with a [B1/3C2/3] graphitic layer. Up to now, hundreds of GIC s with conventional carbon graphite layers have been researched over the years, and this can be the start of new exploration. The intercalant atomic density in the [B/C] GIC is quite high, which may have potential for battery applications. Replacement by other intercalants besides scandium-based ones should be explored. 

An interesting example of a well water survey was given by Dyck ° with emphasis on dissolved ga.ses. He offered an interpretation for radon, helium, hydrogen sulphide, methane, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, neon, argon and total dissolved gas. Other measurements are pH, Eh, conductivity, temperature, zinc, copper, lead and uranium. The result is a proposed new exploration target.

New synthetic antibacterials. The success of antibiotics and sulphona-mides as antibacterials encouraged new exploration of simple synthetic compounds. Isoniazid (6.72), a very simple substance (wonicotinic hydraz-ide), has played the leading part in reducing human tuberculosis from a dreaded scourge to an easily treated disease. It was discovered simultaneously by three independent laboratories (OfFe et al,y 1952 Grunberg and Schnitzer, 1953 Fox, 1953). An even simpler substance, p-aminosali-cylic add, is a valued adjuvant in this treatment.
