Although new emerging technologies may provide more efficient applications in the future [29, 30], so far in all wide field TG-based FLIM systems, the gating process results in the loss of photons and a consequent reduction of the sensitivity (photon-economy).

This chapter focuses on the catalytic conversion of carbohydrates, in particular aerobic oxidation, with the aim of highlighting the potential of new emerging technologies. 

In this chapter, an overview is provided of new emerging technologies for the preparation of monodisperse emulsions with complex multilayered structures. The droplet size, internal structure, and even the compositions of multilayered emulsions can be flexibly controlled by using various microstructured devices. Since each emulsification technology has its own characteristics, the combination of different technologies might enhance the type of multilayered emulsions that can be prepared. 

Table 9 is a very cryptic summary of some of the new emerging technologies. Most of them have been commercialized but not popularized yet. Use of superheated steam instead of air as the drying medium affords numerous advantages, e.g., low net energy consumption if exhaust steam is utilized fully elsewhere in the process, no oxidation/combustion/ /fire/explosion risk, sometimes a better quality product, reduced environmental impact since gaseous emissions can be eliminated.
