We reported the effects of ethanol extract of C. sativus and its purified components on the central nervous system in terms of learning behaviors in mice and the LTP in the dentate gyrus of hippocampus in anesthetized rats and in the CA1 region of rat hippocampal slices [11-13], This review also discusses the values of folk medicines in modulating apoptotic cell death, together with our recent data of crocin s effect on neuronal cell death. 

Similarly, following 10 min of forebrain ischemia, mild hypothermia applied for 3 h attenuated apoptotic death in hippocampal neurons 72 h postinsult (119). The neuroprotection appeared to be correlated with increased expression of Bcl-2, an antiapoptotic protein. 

The mechanism of delayed neuronal injury following TBI includes apoptosis (63,64). Experimental data after cerebral hypoxic-ischemic injury indicate that moderate postinsult hypothermia (34°C) reduced the fraction of apoptotic cells but not cells undergoing necrosis (65). In another study, intraischemic hypothermia reduced the number of transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL)-positive cells after transient focal ischemia (66). Thus, it will be important in future studies to determine whether hypothermia inhibits apoptotic neuronal cell death in models of TBI.
