Netting, pest control

The fate of an organic chemical applied for pest control is the net result of a variety of processes, such as transformation, retention, and transport, all acting in concert on the pesticide.

Nets also have a wide range of uses. Coastal Nets Ltd of Bridport, UK, lists them under the headings fishing safety sports industrial pest control ground mesh hay nets. There are other uses, such as the massive nets on oil rigs to protect the riser from oncoming vessels. 

Measures taken to control sources of larval emergence of sanitary pests are limited, and excessive treatments frequently induce the development of resistance in disease-transmitting insects. On the other hand, control measures by individuals are becoming a trend. For example, patients with malaria have decreased by the popularization of Olyset mosquito nets, which were developed by Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. to deal with noctumally-active blood-sucking anopheles. 

What to do Where this pest is a regular problem, grow leeks under fine mesh netting to keep the moths out Once plants are infested, there is no control other than hand-picking of caterpillars and cocoons from the leaves, or removing the whole plant Clear up all plant debris at harvest Dig over the leek beds. Encourage predators... 

Foliage disappears. Causes Animal pests slugs and snails. Birds and rabbits are quite fond of early anemone leaves. Cover young plants with netting if the problem is severe enough to warrant control. See Stopping Animal Pests on page 408 for control information. 

Fruit gnawed or eaten. Causes Birds squirrels rats other small animals. Use traps or physical barriers to get rid of rodents netting may be necessary for birds. See Stopping Animal Pests" on page 408 for more information on controlling pests. 

Tree stripped of fruit. Cause Birds. Birds especially love red sweet cherries. Plant yellow-fruited cultivars, which are somewhat less attractive to birds. Cover small trees with netting. For more information on controlling birds, see "Stopping Animal Pests on page 408. 

The best defense against birds is a net well-secured at the edges. See Stopping Animal Pests on page 408 for controls. 

Fleece or net crop covers will stop egg laying of some pests such as carrot fly. On a field scale it is expensive although a very effective optiom hr swedes this is the only method available to growers to control cabbage root fly as there are cmrently no suitable recommended chemicals.
