Naturally-occurring radionuclides, waste containing

Waste is not part of basic waste classification system, but large volumes of waste that contains long-lived, naturally occurring radionuclides are given additional consideration.

Mr. Schaller b an his statement by noting that there is, at present, a great diversity of clearance level values being used in the 15 countries of die European Union. On the other hand it is a completely open market allowii essentially free movement of materials from country to country. He then described a number of hypothetical scenarios involving possible movements of cleared materials between countries from points of origin to a scrap dealer in another country. He concluded that it is desirable to have the same or similar criteria in all countries and that this control has to extend to wastes/materials containing naturally occurring radionuclides. 

Very-low-level wastes possess a radioactivity level close to that of naturally occurring radioactivity (between 1 -100 Bq.g ). It contains short-lived and/or long-lived radionuclides. This waste is managed at the ANDRA CSTFA disposal facility located in the Aube district.
