Wool and cotton fibres are still iding applications in leisure wear. S5 thetic fibres can either be modified during manufacture, for example, by producing hollow fibres and fibres with irregular cross-section, or be optimally blended with natural fibres to improve their thermophysiological and sensory properties. Synthetic fibres with improved ultraviolet (UV) resistance and having antimicrobial properties are also commercially available for use in sportswear. 

Besides the high performance fibres used in the OS layer, flame-retardant-treated natural and regenerated fibres such as wool and cellu-losic fibres might also be used to make the thermal insulation liner. Some commercially available TL materials for firefighters clothing are shown in Table 3.8. 

Since 1976 the number of commercial odour adsorbent wound dressings has increased, but it was not until the late 1990s that they were available on prescription in the UK. There are a wide variety of odour adsorbent wound dressings available, but these can differ in construction, composition and, therefore, physical characteristics including odour adsorption. These dressings are composed of many different materials, ranging from the traditional naturally absorbent fibre types such as cotton and viscose, specialist materials such as polyurethane film, and fibres such as alginate and carboxymeth-ylcellulose fibres (CMC).
