Natural drift

Accordingly, changes, mutations, and evolution are seen as the result of the maintenance of the internal structure of the autopoietic organism. Since the dynamic of the environment may be erratic, the result in terms of evolution is a natural drift, determined primarily by the inner coherence and autonomy of the living organism. In this sense, Maturana and Varela s view (Maturana and Varela, 1980 1986) is close to Kimura s (1983) theory of natural drift and to Jacob s (1982) notion of bricolage. Evolution does not pursue any particular aim - it simply drifts. The path it chooses is not, however, completely random, but is one of many that are in harmony with the inner structure of the autopoietic unit. [Pg.166]

Since the chemical potential is usually formulated on a molar basis, division by the Avogadro s number NA appears in the above expression. As the reader will realize, we were careful about using the word force. In fact, f is an apparent, not a real force that pushes the molecules. It is the molecules natural drift toward maximum entropy which drives them (Atkins, 1998). From Chapter 8 one gets ... [Pg.810]

The limiting feature of bivalent sets is that they are mutually exclusive - it is not possible to have a membership of more than one set. It is not accurate to define a transition from a quantity such as warm to hot . In the real world a smooth (unnoticeable) drift fiom warm to hof would occur. The natural phenomenon can be described more accurately by FST. Rgure 6.3 shows how the same information can be quantified using fuzzy sets to describe this natural drift... [Pg.120]

For CW applieations of optieal-heterodyne eonversion, two laser fields are applied to the optoeleetronie material. The non-linear nature of the eleetro-optie effeet strongly suppresses eontimious emission relative to ultrashort pulse exeitation, and so most of the CW researeh earried out to date has used photoeonduetive anteimae. The CW mixing proeess is eharaeterized by the average drift veloeity t and earrier lifetime Xq of the mixing material, typieally... [Pg.1251]

The inadequacy of the worst case model is evident and the statistical nature of the tolerance stack is more realistic, especially when including the effects of shifted distributions. This has also been the conclusion of some of the literature discussing tolerance stack models (Chase and Parkinson, 1991 Harry and Stewart, 1988 Wu et al., 1988). Shifting and drifting of component distributions has been said to be the chief reason for the apparent disenchantment with statistical tolerancing in manufacturing (Evans, 1975). Modern equipment is frequently composed of thousands of components, all of which interact within various tolerances. Failures often arise from a combination of drift conditions rather than the failure of a specific component. These are more difficult to predict and are therefore less likely to be foreseen by the designer (Smith, 1993). [Pg.130]

The solar radiation absorbed on external building surfaces increases the wall surface temperature, thus leading to a change in the heat conducted through the component. In low-wind conditions, free convective flows drift up the warm external wall surface. This changes the convective heat transfer and leads to increased temperatures of supply air for natural ventilation. [Pg.1065]

A natural extension of the studies in Sec. VIIA would be the investigation of the drift of a polymer chain in random environment when a constant external field B is applied in one direction [21,22]. [Pg.605]

Also, SEC-cSFC has been reported [947]. Due to the nature of the interface and the use of conventional-sized SEC columns, only small portions of the SEC fractions can be analysed by cSFC (i.d. <100 xm) packedcapillary SFC would be an obvious improvement to avoid overloading. Fujimoto el al. [931] have reported the combined power of [iSEC-TLC-DRIFT (in situ). Because of the reduced flow-rate, microcolumn HPLC has great promise for this type of coupling. [Pg.556]

Armando Aranda The idea is that in a very simple system like yeast, if you have two genes doing the same function, and then one of the genes should be subject to continuous mutation by drift, because it can t be seen by natural selection. And the amazing thing is that it is not the case that such genes, which are redundant, are subject to random mutation. That s one of the big issues now. [Pg.188]
