National Food Authority

In Australia each State and Territory used to have their own food legislation.8 However, in 1987 the National Health and Medical Research Council produced the Food Standards Code to bring harmonisation of food legislation throughout the country. The Imported Food Control Act requires that all imported foods comply with the Food Standards Code. In August 1991, the new National Food Authority (NFA) was established. NFA is now responsible for setting all food standards in Australia. [Pg.295]

The use of food additives is restricted in all European countries by national order concerning food additives, only those antioxidants specially mentioned are allowed to be used. The antioxidants may only be used with the foods mentioned and in the amounts specified. The veterinary service and national food agencies or other national authorities have supervisory powers. [Pg.291]

An additional factor in the high level of noncompliance is that the Australian MRLs in offal (0.05 mg/kg for chlortetracycline and 0.25 mg/kg for oxytetracycline) are significantly lower than those now recommended by Codex Ali-mentarius (0.60 mg/kg for both compounds). Thus, the registration data, withdrawal periods, and MRLs for these compounds are currently being reviewed by the responsible bodies in Australia, namely the National Registration Authority and the Australia New Zealand Food Authority. [Pg.478]

In April 1997, on behalf of the organic and biodynamic industry, AQIS submitted to the Australia and New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA) an application to vary the Australian food standards to control the words organic and biodynamic . This application has unfortunately struck a technical barrier because ANZFA is a joint initiative between both countries to facilitate similar standards and better flow of food trade. ANZFA has indicated that because New Zealand does not have a national standard and no government recognition of such a standard, then it would be impossible to apply such a change to the Food Act in New Zealand. [Pg.206]

In general, researchers and experts are more common journalistic sources here than politicians. However, none of these groups of stakeholders seem to play a prominent role as opinion leaders in the field (Table 4.4). The content analysis also reveals that officials - quite frequently in the role of specialists - from the three authorities Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (35 hits), Swedish Chemical Authority (31 hits) and Swedish National Food Administration (26 hits) are represented in this material. [Pg.56]

Most national health authorities now recommend increased potassium consumption, along with their advice to cut back on sodium. That s true for the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health the American Heart Association Health Canada and the Australian Heart Foundation. The reason for this unanimity is simple the science just can t be denied. Potassium is a chemical element that helps to maintain normal functioning of muscles, the heart, and the nervous system. Potassium is a major regulator of blood pressure. [Pg.132]

The authors would like to thank all of the members of the JoNuS Project Team for interesting discussions about nutrient transformations in estuaries and coastal environments. JoNuS (Joint Nutrient Study) seeks to quantify the transport of nutrients from land to sea and is funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Department of the Environment and the National Rivers Authority (all UK). The views expressed are those of the authors and do not reflect the policy of the funding departments. [Pg.96]

The list will be decreased as a result of the implementation of new directives, such as the European Biocide Directive that will be fuUy implemented by 2010. The use of biocides in paper production is often further limited by national health authorities, e.g. FDA (USA) and BfR (Europe) for food packaging paper, as well as green label lists such as White Swan. A list of substances used to control microbiological growth on a paper machine is given below ... [Pg.20]

They point to an alternative definition of dependency, when rather than households it is governments that come to rely on relief resources. But they show evidence that because aid is quite irregular—multilateral aid flows via the World Food Programme respond only weakly but at least predictably to shocks, bilateral aid flows from the United States do not respond to shocks at all—governments cannot become dependent on it. The authors also find that food aid has no persistent negative effects on national food production. [Pg.35]

The author sincerely thanks for E>r. Sumio Kawano (National Food Research Institute of Japan), BUCHl Co., and Soma Kogaku Co. for providing photographs. [Pg.144]

For food packaging applications, both additives and polymers need specific toxicological regulations from national health authorities. Because of severe requirements concerning safety, the demand for low-dust versions of additives is steadily increasing, to reduce to a minimum any contamination of human beings on handling. [Pg.547]

In addition to their studies of individuals, these authors also calculated dietary fibre intakes and sources using the National Food Survey ", and found very close agreement between the two sets of data. [Pg.445]

The follow-up of the meeting will include communicating its conclusions to national health authorities and to the public. Close contacts need to be made with the salt industry, to optimize the preparation, utilization and monitoring of iodized salt, and with the food industry, especially regarding the diets of pregnant and lactating women and of neonates. Most important, every effort should be made to advance international action and national policy strategies toward the eradication of IDD in Europe by the year 2000. [Pg.502]
