The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (lOSH) is the safety adviser s professional body and sponsors the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) which examines in the vocational qualification in occupational safety and health. It provides professional services to its members and represents their interests in discussions with government and other bodies. 

In 1978, the Institution drew up a syllabus outlining a range of subjects to be studied and Indicating the depth of knowledge required in each to qualify for membership. This syllabus was designed to accommodate a two tier corporate membership structure and was administered by the Institution. However it was felt that it would be more appropriate for an independent body with closer academic links to take over this aspect of the Institution s activities and in 1979 the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) was established for that purpose,...

Since the last edition, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health has changed its corporate membership structure to a single level, thus eliminating the separate levels of examination and the need for guidance on the particular sections of the book that need to be studied. To match the new membership structure, the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health has revised its syllabus and this has been covert in the updated text.

The British Examining Board in Occupational Hygiene was set up by the British Occupational Hygiene Society in 1968 to examine candidates to well-defined professional standards. This Board has been superseded by the British Institute of Occupational Hygienists. Similar organisations exist in most advanced industrial nations. 

The SHE superintendents were educated by attending 90 hours of internal safety and health training and by studying for the NEBOSH certificate. Field and practical development of the SHE superintendents was undertaken. A centralized safety supervisor was appointed in the safety department. The National Examination Board Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) certificate course was attended by all safety staff. One day a week was given off for this study by the company.
