Focused on substance abuse among girls and women, this book includes a chapter on illicit use of prescription drugs. The research reported in the volume compares the addiction and abuse of women to that of men. Although women abuse drugs less than men, the problem remains a significant one. Women tend to become addicted more quickly than men and benefit from different types of treatments.

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), based at Columbia University in New York, surveyed 2,000 teens and 1,000 parents. The results of this survey offer a comprehensive picture of what teens think about drugs and how substance abuse has impacted their lives. 

While many things about marijuana remain controversial, even the most liberal supporters consider its use by adolescents harmful. It is possible that the increased popularity of marijuana is cyclical, and that this drug will become less popular as new information about its effects on the body is discovered. More is known about marijuana today than was known when many parents smoked it as teens. Some of the most important effects are noted by Joseph Califano, president of the National Center of Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University Marijuana can savage short-term memory and adversely affect motor skills. It inhibits social and emotional development at the time when such skills and development are most critical for teens. There are very real dangers attached to marijuana s frequent use. 

Operated by the Federal Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, this organization provides a wide range of free information and resources on drug use and abuse, including material from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Addiction, and more. 

Based on the information in the previous section, treatment would not be expected to have much of an impact on substance use and the problems related to addiction. Surprisingly, that is not the case. The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment sponsored a congressionally mandated study of treatment outcomes for clients in public-sector treatment programs. The National Treatment Improvement Evaluation Study followed 4,411 clients in 78 treatment sites across the country for 5 years. Clients were from vulnerable and underserved populations such as minorities, pregnant women, youth, public housing residents, welfare...
