Naloxone (Narcan) and naltrexone hydrochloride (Trexan) reverse the respiratory depressant action of narcotics related to morphine, meperidine, and methadone. They differ from other narcotic analgesics in several respects. Naloxone does not cause respiratory depression, pupillary constriction, sedation, or analgesia. However, it does antagonize the actions of pentazocine. Naloxone neither antagonizes the respiratory depressant effects of barbiturates and other hypnotics nor aggravates their depressant effects on respiration. Similar to nalorphine, naloxone precipitates an abstinence syndrome when administered to patients addicted to opiate-like drugs. [Pg.472]

A 44-year-old physically healthy woman developed auditory and visual hallucinations and persecutory delusions. She had been given naltrexone hydrochloride 50 mg/day 3 days before the acute psychotic incident in order to prevent relapse of alcohol dependence. Her psychotic symptoms completely resolved 48 hours after withdrawal of naltrexone. [Pg.689]

Naltrexone hydrochloride is anarcotic antidote. It is an opioid receptor antagonist, markedly attenuating or completely blocking, reversibly, the subjective etfects of fV-administered opioids. It is indicated in the treatment of alcohol dependence and as a blockade of exogenously administered opioids. [Pg.481]

Naltrexone is an opioid receptor antagonist used primarily in the management of alcohol and/or opioid dependence. It is marketed in generic form as its hydrochloride salt, naltrexone hydrochloride, and sold under the trade names Revia and Depade. Naltrexone and its active metabolite 6-p-naltrexol are competitive antagonists at p- and K-opioid receptors, and to a lesser extent at 8-opioid receptors [5]. Naloxone is a drug used to counter the effects of opioid... [Pg.35]

Drug fonnniations Naltrexone hydrochloride precipitated severe opioid withdrawal in a 39-year-old woman with a history of chronic pain who instead of methadone 160 mg/day was given Embeda, a new product combining morphine sulfate 30 mg extended release with naltrexone 1.2 mg, intended to reduce the abuse potential of morphine [215 ]. She chewed the tablet, instead of swallowing it, releasing the naltrexone. [Pg.168]
