N-Decanoic acid

Examination of the mass spectrum of n-decanoic acid (Figure 4.1) shows prominent ions at m/z 60 and 73. A m/z 60 ion (Section III) (see also Appendix 10) suggests the mass spectrum may represent an aliphatic carboxylic acid. This ion in combination with m/z 73... [Pg.224]

The use of carboxylic acids for the removal of iron(III) from solutions of the rare-earth metals has been reported,38 but has not been described in detail. The stoichiometries of the extracted complexes of iron(III) have not been clearly established. The n-decanoic acid complex has been variously described as (FeA3)3 and Fe3A9 x(OH) (HA) 51 or [Fe(OH)A2]2 and [Fe(OH)2A-HA]2,57 the H-octanoic acid complex as (FeA3-H20)3,58 the naphthenic acid complex as FeA3,47 and that of Versatic 10 acid as [FeA3(HA)J>, or [Fe(OH)A2]3.59... [Pg.791]

Olefinic acids are cleaved by heating with alkali hydroxides and a small amount of water. The other products of the reaction are hydrogen gas and potassium acetate. The double bond may be in any position in the chain of the original olefinic acid, but it is isomerized to the a, S-position before cleavage. Examples are n decanoic acid (74%) from dodecenoic acid and palmitic acid from 9-octadeccnoic acid (oleic acid). The reaction is of little value in preparative work. [Pg.222]

Versatic acid has been used in Japan to recover indium and gallium from solutions obtained from the leaching of bauxites, zinc minerals, coal ash and flue dusts. - Extraction is carried out at a pH value of 2.5 to 4.0 some coextraction of tin(II), iron(III) and aluminum(III) occurs if these metals are present. In the extraction of indium(III) by n-hexanoic acid, the predominant species in the organic phase was found to be InA3(HA)3 whereas in the extraction by n-decanoic acid the existence of trimeric (InA3 HA)3 and hexameric [InA2(OH)]6 species was also postulated. [Pg.791]

DECANOIC ACID or n-DECANOIC ACID (334-48-5) Combustible solid (flash point >230°F/>110°C cc). Incompatible with sulfuric acid, alkalis, ammonia, aliphatic amines, alkanolamines, alkylene oxides, amides, epichlorohydrin, organic anhydrides, isocyanates, vinyl acetate. May increase the explosive sensitivity of nitromethane. Attacks most common metals. [Pg.376]

The dynamics of mixtures of surfactants with proteins is of great importance for many practical processes, such as coating of photographic films, where gelatine in mixtures with surfactants and surface active dyes adsorb at the interface. Hempt et al. (1985) studied the relaxation behaviour of gelatine solutions in presence and absence of surfactants (SDS, tetradecyl dimethyl phosphine oxide, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, n-decanoic acid, perfluoro octanoic acid tetraethyl ammonium salt). [Pg.230]
