In the minds of many, especially those who have not had the opportunity to use it, catalytic hydrogenation has acquired an aura of mystery the choice of catalyst seems capricious, operating conditions arbitrary, catalyst preparation secret, and the working of the catalyst unfathomable. It is the purpose of this work to meet these objections to provide rationale for choice of catalyst and conditions to acquaint the reader with catalysts, equipment, and procedure and to impart the conviction that hydrogenation is a powerful, readily handled, broad-scoped procedure of general utility for synthesis in both laboratory and industrial plant. 

Similarly, examples of barriers arising largely from simple steric hindrance can be found, as for instance in the hindered diphenyls.35 On the other hand there are many arguments suggesting that this is not the important force in ethane and similar molecules. While seen as almost an exclusively Christian symbol, the cross has existed since the dawn of the mysteries. The working esoteric tradition of the West is often referred to as the Mysteries. The term mystery is used in the theological sense, where a mystery is a spiritual reality that transcends normal reasoning. The ultimate goal of the Mysteries is divinization our complete and utter identification with the All-That-ls, the One Reality. In many Eastern traditions, this is called enlightenment. In the Western tradition, it is called illumination. 

In real Schools of the Soul (esoteric groups giving valid training in the Mysteries), the identities of their inner teachers—for there is an inner group behind the outer group—are not revealed to their apprentices in order to avoid this problem of projection and to encourage apprentices in the Mysteries to develop discrimination, to assess a teaching for themselves. In tarot, this is why the card of Reason (Key IV The Emperor) comes before the card of Intuition (Key V The Hierophant). 

The Egyptian school is the fountainhead of the Western Mysteries, the Mother Lodge having been established there as the abode of the Bee King. In The Kybalion—that book of wisdom written by three Hermetic initiates, it says ... 

True progress, from the esoteric viewpoint, consists of the alignment of the lower, personal consciousness with the higher, spiritual consciousness, to create an efficient tool whereby the will of the Eternal may be fulfilled in Earth, even as it is in the heavens above. This, of course, is the true reason for the knowledge and training imparted by the rulers of the Mysteries—the Lords of Compassion—and is the only truly acceptable reason for any esoteric work. This is the true line of advancement, the Path that leads to the fulfillment of the Great Work, for in His will is our perfect peace. All other lines of progress, all other lines of interest, ire but partial aspects of this Path of Return, which is open to all humanity.

Another area that is lacking is the chemistry of solids. In pharmaceuticals, an active drug is often made into a tablet or some other solid. Unknowns remain in the areas of solids flow, solids compressibihty, and compaction. The physical incompatibility of various inert ingredients also remains a mystery. The engineering community has a great opportunity to help in this area.

It is useful in beet-root establishments, on account of the large amount of lime needed to throw down the substances in the juice. In the sugar, ot in the Juice of the sugar-cano, no such excess of extraneous matter exists, and no large excess of lime ought to be used. Such at least Is the opinion of the writer, and his experience has not been small. Charcoal itself is like a cavern of mysteries, the more it is studied the more wonderful are ite secrets. Science has not yet approached the difficulties as seen in practice, and partly overcome.
