Myristylation

Flotation. Tallow amines contain small amounts of short-chain compounds, eg, the octyl, lauryl, and myristyl (C ) groups. These amines usually produce enough froth for the flotation. Small quantities of specialized synthetic alcohols, eg, Dowfroth P, are frequentiy added to the flotation system to supplement the natural frothers. The quantities of the reagents used ia potash flotation plants are Hsted ia Table 5. [Pg.526]

Yields of the primary alkyl acrylates vary somewhat, owing to occasional losses through formation of polymer, but are usually in the range of 85-99%. Some secondary alcohols react very slowly, others readily. The method has been applied to more than fifty alcohols, some of which (with percentage yields) are listed below ethyl, 99% isopropyl, 37% -amyl, 87% isoamyl, 95% -hexyl, 99% 4-methyl-2-pentyl, 95% 2-ethylhexyl, 95% capryl, 80% lauryl, 92% myristyl, 90% allyl, 70% fur-furyl, 86% citronellyl, 91% cyclohexyl, 93% benzyl, 81% (3-ethoxyethyl, 99% /S-(/3-phenoxyethoxy) ethyl (from diethylene glycol monophenyl ether), 88%. [Pg.20]

The slow water removal is obvious within the synthesis of, for example, myristyl myristate determining the total reaction time. In a stirred-tank reactor it takes 24 h to reach a conversion of 99.6% and in a fixed-bed reactor 14 h. Therefore, a new synthesis platform (Figure 4.11) which also enables conversion of highly viscous polyols and fatty acids from renewable resources to ester-based surfactants was designed. It is used by Evonik on a pilot scale, outperforming conventional methods, such as stirred-tank or fixed-bed reactors. In contrast to the setups introduced before, conversion of >99.6% is already obtained after 5.5 h in the bubble column reactor [44-47]. [Pg.90]

Historically, one of the most important uses of DTA analysis has been in the study of interactions between compounds. In an early study, the formation of 1 2 association complexes between lauryl or myristyl alcohols with sodium lauryl or sodium myristyl sulfates have been established [21]. In a lesson to all who use methods of thermal analysis for such work, the results were confirmed using X-ray diffraction and infrared absorption spectroscopic characterizations of the products. [Pg.80]

The so ealled a phase of the fatty alcohols is a thermotropic type smectic B liquid crystal with a hexagonal arrangement of the moleeules within the double layers. It is initially formed from the melt during the manufaeturing proeess and normally transformed into a erystalline modifleation on eooling. However, the erystallization of the gel matrix ean be avoided if the a phase ean be kept stable as it eools to room temperature.
